22re?? I dont have one of those  its currently got a 3rz-fe

J_Dub, after how well it went down south, I dunno if I can be bothered taking the 3rz out, with 20 odd forward gears, I dont really need a lot more hp, mebbe the v8 will find a home in my old zook instead   if i find that I suddenly need more wally, I'll bolt a turbo, or supercharger on it......but I cant see it happening honestly :D

When Jafa makes a statement using the words ---- cant and ---- honestly in the same sentence I am forced to get the Dictionary out.

cant = noun; any hypocritically pious language.
verb; to cause to slant or tilt.
so then I had to look up hypocritically.
hypocritically = from the word hypocrisy:= the pretence of having certain qualities, beliefs or feelings, especially admirable or virtuous ones.

honestly = truthful or free from deceit or pretence.

Still not being totally satisfied with Jafas reply I thought what would Nibby say, ,

HE'S TELLING PORKIES AGAIN,

Righto, been tryin to wheel the piss outta my Jalopy, not alot of breakage from the 14 day Xmas trip except for destroying 3 80 series rod ends, and elongating the hole in my Histeer arm
Image

Image

Pulled the arm with the intention of boring the hole out to 3/4 and use a Heim joint instead of tierod ends. Had to put it together with a billet 4 stud arm to go out over the weekend, and took a heavy hit on the sidewall of the tire/rim and destroyed the arm, ripped the kingpin out of the arm, grenade'd the bearing, snapped all 4 toyota studs, and bent the rock rings.  Managed to get it trail fixed by pulling the remaining 2 studs that weren't being used, pulling the Longfield out (couldn't find all the bearing bits, didnt want to risk munching them in the birf), bolting the arm back on without the bearing and crawling back to camp.

Image

Image

Also distorted my six shooter knuckle, hard to see in the pic, but theres a gap partway around the kingpin now, where the material has moved

Image

Got it pulled apart tonite and have come up with a plan. I think because of the tire size and the Hydro assist, when ya bash the side of the tire on something rigid, all the force is transferred through the steering components and stops at the ram, coz the fluid wont compress. I notice that the steering wheel doesn't get yanked out of your hands when ya hit something. This is why I sheared off the tierod ends, its only 12mm or so dia where it broke. I also noticed that the stock knuckle stud/cone washer setup allows the arm to rotate about the kingpin if enough force is applied, bending, then breaking the studs. This could be why they keep coming undone too.The cone washers grip the stud 7 to 8mm above the surface of the knuckle housing, as below

Image

My solution is to mill a keyway into the top of the swivel housing, and a matching one under the arm, and replace the 12mm studs with 16mm capscrews, this way the arm is not relying on the studs to prevent rotation, instead the kingpin and the key will do that, and the capscrews will clamp the arm to the housing and thats all

Image

Hopefully this will work

Hi Jafa

Sounds like a good scheme.

Is there no way of fitting a release valve to the hydro Ram so after a certain pressure builds it lets go ?

Cheers Richard

I had wondered about that myself, and am seeing whats available, would be good to have an extra safety. :)

Keep us up to date on this one Jafa. Like the milling idea, have you posted on Pirate to get the shear forces required to shear the extra keyway? When I converted my swivels to 5 stud, one of the guys there had done the numbers and it worked out to be 40% more effective than having 4 studs. You with 6 should be way up there, and then with a key way as well.................

Or you could just be more careful, and stop driving it beyond it's capabilities

bit o progress on the knuckle stud "beef-up" Now sporting 16mm capscrews, and a 16mm key 8)

Looks a bit stronger, and the key looks like it will resist all forces trying to turn it around the kingpin....wonder what the weak bit will be now
