Dude, grab as many of those discarded thermocouples as you can. They're worth between $50-$100 each.
There is no "calibration" in the cables, it's just the cold-temperature junctions mentioned earlier in this thread. Repairing the cable with the right connectors keeps cold temp junctions at bay.

That's why VDO tell you not to shorten the cable, because they know you'll be using the wrong connectors and creating extra junctions.

Yes the cable has polarity. Red is negative, yellow is positive but there are other colour codings too.

Bringing up an old topic but I too am about to fit one of these. I bought the Jaycar kit. I paid $40 from a mate who works at Jaycar and I am now sitting here looking at lots of little electronic gubbins, wotsits and whodackame things with my 40watt soldering iron in my hand.

Anyway- I am actually fitting this into the top hose of my Rotary powered Viva and if it works out OK I'll put one into our old '87 4wd hiace. Interesting thread- I never knew that exhaust temps meant so much. I'm one for carefully watching the temp gauge and can now imagine the delight in watching a EGT gauge!

I may need to extend my prope wire- I found this info...

I got my gauge and thermo from them. Got the one with the lugs on the ends and it came with nuts, bolts for joining and heat shrink too. Then you can use any 2 ply wire to extend to the gauge. They sell the extension wire for the others too.
They are local so made life easy.
