oh joy... from nowhere, onto the fist rung of the ladder...!

Post by niblik »

yay!

got the car transporter today and picked up the chassis from the blasters. they did a great job of sandblasting all in the rails and nooks and crannies.. after the blast, they gave the entire chassis a coat of some kind of primer that has a slight rust kill agent in it too.. sweet! :happyjump:

Image

this next photo is just a bit of a close up to show that its actually a good coat and great overall job done... most happy...

Image

after oooooing and ahhhhing over the frame, i got the 3b and bits onto the trailer and took it down to a contact of h2olova's (thanks yet again fella!) for a decent session on the steam water blaster... tell ya, wear wet weather gear. i didnt. crap. :'-(
if ya can block all vulnerable entry/exit points prior to blastin , and go for gold, its very satisfyin...

steam cleaned engine... looks greasy but is better than before, for sure! ya can tell how much cleaner everything is by comparing the alternators ,transfers, around oil filter and compressors in before/after photos..

Image

next is to plan exactly what mod to do.. so to the drawing board to map out all facets of the project, proritise necessities and get a projected plan of attack...

:bubble: see ya soon...

Question when fitting the 60 diffs to the 40. Do the output shaft need to line up when looking along the length of the chassis? i would think so but just checking.

The straighter they are the less angle on the drivehsaft UJs... also the less trouble they can get into over rough terrain.

They don't have to be, and a little off is fine, but the straighter the better.

well.. h2o and i have had a few revelations as of late..

whilst deciding to pull of the spring hangers from the chassis ( to remove any scale under the mounts that the blasting couldnt reach ) thought to look at them a bit more closely.. found that the pins on the 'rebuild 40' are smaller than the 'ole rusty' i have, or the 'donor 60's'. nb, didnt know what year the 'rebuild 40' was, had no details.. outer bush diameter from the 'old 40' is 25mm and the bushes from the 60 (which is the same as the 80 and after 40's ) are 38mm or somethin like that..

so, to sum up.....

the 40 chassis i'm modding up is a 69 to 80 model, and the bushes, shackle mounts, springs, greasable pins and extended shackles are going to have to be changed from pre 80 to post 80.. i knew it was comin, just had to sort details of what went where... ouch.. doin spring reversal whilst at it too..

for those not familiar, a spring reversal takes the front spring packs mounts and swaps them.. this dramatcally decreases the possibilty of spring inversion and also increases the front approach angle... yay!

so......

new everything..... 8-O

will get pics once parts are sourced and possibly fabbed up...

do it once, do it right....

OK, so spring inversion? Does it give lift too? Is the rear mount larger than the front? Sorry have read about it before and didn`t get it then either

Lift remains pretty standard. The theory is like pushing a wheelbarrow over a log as oppossed to pulling it over a log. With the shackle moving from the front of the truck the wheel naturally wants to move forward then up, creating a "bump" effect. Once this is reversed the wheel will move back and up, allowing the wheel to roll over the obstacle.

How confused are you now

sweet as.. :D as h2o said, this mod uses the standard mounts, only puts the fronts around though, as the backs are already this way..

so the mods keep comin..

Also known as a shackle reversal.

The shackles at the front of the truck act like small plows... so guys reverse it and set it up like a Hilux, which has the shackles at the rear of the front packs in order to clean up the approach angle.

Upside: Better cleaner approach angle, slightly better handling
Downside: The pivot point is now going to mean under droop your front driveshaft will need S&%tloads of slipjoint to stop it falling out... make a square tube one for offroad use (you won't get one cert'd)

One the handling... the way it is will cause oversteer, as the truck rolls out in a corner, flattening the outside spring and pushing the outside wheel forward as a consequence, and the inside one moves back... kind of like buggy steeering and in extreme cornering manouvres it can cause the truck to oversteer badly. The opposite can cause understeer... which I think I'd prefer to oversteer... its a little more predictable to correct for.

Good to hear you're doing it... yeah, the pre-80's models all had 25mm pins, late 79-82 had 35mm pins. You get better flex from the bigger pins as theres more bush to move about, and its stronger... not that they suffer from strength issues, but for peace of mind it can't hurt :)

thats a big 10-4 steve.. i agree.. heres a pic of the old mount off the 40 that has smaller bushes and is crap for my needs...
Image

then theres the same mounts but off the 60(which is the same on the later 40's and same on the 60's too... oooh, i have one of those too.. ;D so off they came...
Image

so just to reiterate a point,

small bushes bad, big is good...

you can see the size difference from the left hand yellow 25mm bush to the orange 35mm bush on the right.. better..
Image

that was last night.. today i took these four mounts into work and used the sandblaster and took them back to recoat and 'spruce' them up a bit...

body mods gettin there...

Post by niblik »

alright! went round to mates today and hes been a busy little beaver...

:bubble: so far hes modded the small vertical piece of panel that sits on top of the front guards so its now raised the guard by 56mm...

this is how tall the original was....
Image
oogly huh?

and now the raised by 56mm...(just not bolted yet so you can see him holding the modded piece)
Image

on top of that he has changed the front of the tub to match the guard coming up.. below you'll see where hes replaced the piece with captive nuts where the guard flare bolts up.. also the rock slider is made of 50mm square, 3 or 4mm thick steel tube.. angle at front to be flush with body, same at the rear.. also there is a c-notch taken out of the pipe to accomodate a structural gusset in the 40's tub. this c-notch and both ends of pipe will be welded closed.. also the sill has been rolled around to wrap around the bar..(might be able to see it in the pics, sorry.. was in a hurry.. )
Image

and from under the tub lookin back up and out at it... dunno whether to weld it in or bolt... i think weld, bolts will give rocks something to catch on.. solid bit of bar :!: :!: you can see the c-notch and gussety bit... :D
Image

got some bushes and greasable fixed pins from warren at 4wdbits (thanks for the purty colour parts warren :!:   )... talk about prompt delivery :!: :!: sweet :!: other parts on order from other suppliers..

will update more soon.. :pirate: arrrrrrrhhhh loves me build...
