Seems like its all slowed down a bit

The spring perch change is soaking up the evenings with all sorts of curve balls. I thought I was all done last night until I went to clean up the area under the old spring perches. The wire brush uncovered some scary shit. Rust holes in the axle tubes.

Must be Karma for hacking up LJ axles

Any how, I got some more pic's of doing the rear axle. Got some of how I set the perches up this time.

The diff set up with the factory perch level, and the new perch set up level and square ready to be tacked on:

One on:

And where it got left at 11:30pm last night
Image

This weekends mission is to get it back to a rolling chassis

I have been gathering the parts required to get it rolling, looks like a mission!!!!
Image

Oh, and because of DaveM's thread on bikes and my 2stroke tendencies, here's the expansion chamber I'm gonna get made for the Wombat. Need to find a place in Hamilton who are willing :D

Image
Image

Anyhow, cracked into the pile of parts tonight, and stripped the rear wheel bearings off the axles ready to get the new ones pressed on tomorrow.

Bearing removal is fun!!
Image

Cut with a skinny and hit with BFH and BFChisle, and it all falls off on the ground in a neat little pile
Image
Image

I'm dreading removing the front axles from the stock LJ80 CVs. I remember last time Wopass and I "gently persuading them to come out" with two handed swings of a copper BFH. It was brutal

Pete, like all your build threads I am following this one, your attention to detail, speed of build and willingness to share keeps you at #1 on the must read list on ORE :D .
Now I would like to give a bit of friendly advice to all Readers and Users of "Skinny Cutting Discs used in Hand Tools" The threaded hole in the head of the Angle Grinder is to take a HANDLE, please make sure it is fitted and used, hold firmly with both hands and not both hands around the motor part of the Tool.
 , one did bite, ripped out of hands through the top of boot and half way through the FOOT :( , many operations latter, twelve months of Pain Clinic, back at work part time after eighteen months OFF, will never be right  , (a work mate).
:D , on a brighter note, don't worry  ,

IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO YOU ,

FITZY.
PS; not getting at you Pete------keep sharing.

Progress :D

The weekend started with the final tidy up of the axles and quick prep and paint.

Front

Rear

Blinging

Saturday morning started with us getting creative splitting the LJ80 axles of the CV's. Some reason on Friday we decided that the chassis puller was going to make it all soooooooo easy

Plan A = FAIL Vice ripped clean off bench
Image

Plan B = FAIL Couldn't grip the axle tight enough
Image

Plan C = WIN Cut the fawker out
Image

Axles ready
Image

U bolts and brake backing plates ready
Image

Front axle going together:
Image

Bling new discs and shitty old AVM hubs
Image

Nice new swivel hub rebuild kit installed
Image

Front axle done
Image

Rear axle done

Waiting for the chassis
Image

Font end getting bolted in
Image

Rear end going in
Image

Sitting on all fours again. Shitty rims and tyres, but its rolling
Image

Spanners, your doing it wrong man!!!!!
Image

The left overs
Image

Off to the Hay shed for storage. Yes, its bloody muddy and wet between the House and the Hay Shed, depending on which way you go of course
Image

Progress is good, looks much less like a couple of piles of parts on the floor in the shed

There's some big rust holes to patch

I get to avoid the photo's co's I'm always on the end of camera

Its time to start scheming about the number one most important investment on every 4x4. What wheels and tyres to run on it.......

Standard tyres are 600 - 16's. They give it awesome ground clearence, about 270mm at the lowest point. Thats stock. The side walls are cracked and perished, so wouldn't pass a WOF.

I have a set of L78 - 15's, they are about the same diameter, but quite a bit wider. Would need a set of 15 X 7 rims to run those.

Image

I would like to keep the original look of the standard steel rims, but the only way to increase the offset is to add a 50mm insert to the rim. Then I run into VINN issues

Not much action this week as I have been in Taupo working :| :|

Saying that, my goal was to get the brake lines cleaned up and fitted this week, and I got that done:
Image

Will I was away, I finally made up my mind on what to do with the motor. Its been a tricky one.

If $$$ was no issue, I would have Suzispares in Oz get me all the bearings and seals for the crank from Japan, and a top end overhaul kit off ebay. I have enough good conrods and a good crank to make a nice fully rebuilt motor. I will probably do this in the near future, but for now there is no point soaking up the projects budget with motor parts when there is potentially another probably quite good option.

That option is another motor I have which is in pieces that I bought years ago, apparently it had a blown head gasket. It looks like it has had a recent top end overhaul as there are fresh hone marks in the bores. It has the weird factor though, it looks like the head gasket was either re-used with RTV, or a new gasket was installed with RTV, or the head gasket leaked so someone tried to stop the leak by using RTV

Eitherway, it was a major fail!!! It can't have done much running as there was still a tiny bead of excess RTV inside the combustion chambers

The motor was the spare for when the motor in The50 died, which at the time I presumed would be sooner rather than later considering it was full of water when I got it

Anyway it has sat around for a few years now full of oil and grease to preserve it, I have a new gasket set for it, a new water pump, and maybe even a new dizzy cap and rotor.

So why spend $$$$ when this is sitting there?? Be interesting to see if it will run, and for how long

So tonights mission was to drag it out of storage and start cleaning all of the oil and grease out of it and get it ready for reassembly with a new head gasket etc.

I think I must have put maybe 5L of petrol through my parts washer spray gun, and it finally looked like this after a clean and re-lube with fresh 2stroke oil:
Image
Image
Image

Nice clean lubed crank :D
Image

Just about ready for the head to go on:
Image

The cylinder head getting a petrol bath to try and soak some of the oil deposits off. You can see the RTV still clinging to it. I might take it in and get it checked in case it needs a skim, as the possibility exists that it might have warped and caused the head gasket to leak........

Image

I also started cleaning up some of the parts for the rear brakes to its ready to go when I sort the new wheel cylindes and shoes. Fiddly shit jobs, but ya gotta do them

Doesn't look like much progress from the weekend, but it was progress non the less :D :D :D

I spent the best part of it tinkering away with the motor. Heating up parts to get seized bolts out, cleaning gasket surfaces, replacing frost plugs, finding I only had one new water pump not two etc etc

The best part was I had spent a few hours working on a cylinder head, only to notice that it had a bodge repair on one of the spark plug threads. Some sort of threaded insert. Not a Heli coil?? Either way, it would have had an effect on the compression ratio.

I ended up with the second choice head from a motor that has lunched itself. The result being that one of the chambers in the head is a bit peppered from ring shrapnel  , but it will do for now. I even picked a ring fragment out that had embedded itself in the chamber.

I have one more head if I get desperate, but its stuck on the block. I went to unbolt it and the heads sheared off the bolts. Bloody electrolysis, alloy head, steel head bolts

Anyway, some pics :D :D

Dragged some of the stash into the shed to pinch stuff off. 4 motors to make one
Image

Dirty rusty old shitter, seized, total wreck. It donated the cylinder head and a few odds and ends:
Image

Parts engine. Has a nice crank. It almost donated a clutch, but it
was to worn to be worth it.
Image

And this is the original motor from Wombat, its donating all sorts of stuff, but being left in a state that if this motor experiment fails, it can be slapped back in quickly.
Image

Its still waiting for the alternator, starter and air cleaner, but is definitely looking like a motor again:
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Progress. Its all progress :D :D

Yeeeeeeehaaw!!!!!!

The 3 Pot Ring Ding is back owwwn da chassis

I went on a massive hunt through the spares collection tonight and scrounged up a couple of good engine mounts, so after re-greaseing the dizzy drive and swapping the alternator onto the new motor, it was time to drop it back onto the chassis 8) 8)

I'm short of a clutch, two gearbox mounts and one transfer case mount and that will see the engine and driveline complete, then its body work time

Some pic's of it remounted to the chassis :D

It amuses me how it looks like it sits up high with out the body work round it

And I have been playing with wheels and tyres

A couple of pic's of the crazy spark plug thread on the now spare head. Was chatting about it at smoko today and apparently the threaded insert repair is quite a common repair on small aircraft engines. Preferred over a Heli coil.
Repair is on the right:
Image
Image
Image

Tonights little 1/2 hour effort (more like a couple of hours, but ohwell) was to give the exhaust a really quick scrub up and paint. wasn't worth going overboard as we all know what exhausts look like after the first drive

The rubber mounts were toast as you would expect, so out came the box of random bushes and the drill, and new mounts were created :D :D

Exhaust in place:
Image
Image

The bodged up exhaust mounts 8) 8) 8)
Image
Image

The cool little stock Suzuki muffler :D :D
Image

........and the gap in the exhaust system patiently waiting for the arrival of the expansion chamber
Image

I would love to get this, but just dreaming about it will do for now

This would also be good fun

New clutch all good to go. Can't believe Waikato Brake and Clutch had one siting on the shelf!!!

Slapped on :D
Image

Scrubbed up a gearbox and slapped that on aswell.

Then some how the wiring monster escaped from its cage, all chaos broke loose and with in the space of half an hour or less my ears were ringing, my eyes were stinging, and I had a fukken huge grin on my face
Image

Some freaky wiring and re-looming :
Image
Image
Image
Image

Co's I'm slightly nuts, I thought seeing as the motor and box were all mounted in the chassis and I was sick of tripping over the wiring loom, I somehow ended hooking shit up and giving the feshly assembled motor a run
