Cheers all hugh relive that its passed now - just gotta hope that lvvta dont request the bumpsteer test as that'll be more money.
Brakes after lots and lots of vacuum bleeding and couple bottles of fluid finally got the air outta system. Looks like it was getting trapped somewhere prob bias valve as it didn't have a nipple on it for some reason

Re: John's surf project v8 and SAS - UPDATE 18 NOVEMBER
So its been a while since last updated. been getting a little seat time in it. am very happy.
Seemed to chew through fuel pretty bad so change out the water temp sensor as old 1 buggered. that fixed that issue

then there was the trouble of the battery sliding around even with a clamp so i fixed it by making this

next was the first stage of the sound system. sub and amp still to be installed

right so im wanting to run twin batteries mainly for winch but also camping so i needed to change the intake around abit and also fit an air box. still needs finishing (hopefully next weekend)

and got a snorkel for it

am getting it shortened abit as its too high

so thats it for the update. be another in a couple of weeks

And heres the origional snorkel, I sold that one to him after I bought it for a mate but he sold his surf before fitting it.
Awesome solid and great looking snorkels and full credit to the clever bugger who made them but sorry to say I think that one was the last one hes making for a while.
That one was a prototype for a new polishing method hence the welds visible in his compared to mine but either way they look the part.

Re: John's surf project v8 and SAS
Finished the winch install finally. Well winch was finished last week but spent the day setting up in cab control

Switch with red cover turns on and off the cab controls
Once this switch is on the red led between buttons lights up
The 2 red round buttons are in and out
Also got my uhf radio installed

]

Forgot to get a pic of external cb speaker setup.

Very nice. Quite jelious now
Really need to come see it in action at some stage and have a poke and a prod at your solid axle setup as I think its about time to do that to mine now too.
Glad the snorkel worked out well, looks a treat

Re: John's surf project v8 and SAS
Update time:
So after a lot of swearing and cursing got the rear main seal replaced. Changing seal was the easy part - gearbox was the swearing and cursing boy do they weigh a shit load

Then came the front axle rebuild

Kingpin bearings were well past use by date

Putting back together

Full knuckle rebuild kit
Wheel bearing kit
New rotors
New wheel studs and nuts
Removal of rotor backing plate by cutting to keep the spacer right
New steering arm ends x4

Re: John's surf project v8 and SAS
Hope you enjoyed the front rebuild. You will be doing it again before too long
There are ways you can reduce the water entry etc the housing components, but some people think it is the wrong thing to do as you will cook the wheel bearings.
Still, I have always pumped my hubs chock full of grease (grease nipple drilled and tapped into hub) and have never had issues with bearing overheat as all the naysayers tell me I will. (maybe in a race car, but it is a 4wd FFS).
Rig is looking sweet John.

Cheers Grant it does mean a lot when guys with more capable and highly setup 4wds do say "things" looking good and proactively offering advice.
Rebuild is messy work and like you said it wont be the last time is do it

drill and tapping hub to add grease nipple- what part u talking about? knuckle, wheel bearing hub or fwh?
had a look at a few forums on tricks to rebuilding the front end and try get more life out of the job. So i have added more grease than normal to knuckle housings, set all bearing preloads little bit higher than specs etc.

Re: John's surf project v8 and SAS
In the wheel bearing hub. Hole drilled and tapped between the 2 wheel bearings. It means you can pump it full of grease, and if it is full of grease there is no room for water to bugger up the bearings. When you finish filling them up, just remove the grease nipple and place a grub screw in there (otherwise you can't get the wheel on and off
) Stripping the front end is a shithouse job, so if you can avoid it, all the better I say.
As I said, some think this idea creates excess bearing heat, and it probably does at 140kph, but I don't know of to many rigs that actually get used that are capable of maintaining that sort of road speed.

cheers.
yeah was thinking hub but had me stumped on how to get wheel back on but a grub screw makes sense. That is true usually above 130kph they do start to get a hand full on 35s

So after more runs it became known that the cooling side was having trouble keeping up so the pics will do the talking.
