not that I think that thing will ever legaly be driven on the road again but where the bullbar is going to sit is right in front of the headlights obstructing the beam, you might want to throw a few spotlights on the front if your going to be driving it in the dark

Quick update, had a sunny day so spent a good few hours on this little guy.

Much chopping of rear barwork to lighten it up and get it out of the way, will be much more minimal that previous, also started welding in some strengthening pieces... no pics of either but as you would expect the work is ugly but will do the job.. a bit like me really :/

Also started chopping away a big chunk of body work at the back/sides, there are a few reasons for this... namely cancer and the need to get the aforementioned barwork up and out of the way.

Pic: I ran out of cutting disks so cutting job unfinished but I'm sure you get the idea.

Image

Also just to give you an idea of the previous rust "repairs" here is the front wheel well (looking back toward drivers door) with as much of the Space Invader as I could get to removed :/

And just for entertainment value (and to see what the clearance was like/how much chopping the guards need) I threw the new feet on... looking much more purposeful!

Before:

After:

Also did some sundry shopping/procuring pipe and such for snorkel, cable, connectors, antenna etc for CB random bits and bobs... Need to get more cutting disks so I can make some more noise/progress :D

more or less done trimming the rear, neighbor came over and had a winge about all the grinding lol (really need to get a w/shop somewhere!) so finished that up for the day and welded a panel in to cover the massive hole. No pics of horrid welding but will post some when the rest of the holes are patched up... Pics for you sickos who enjoy lada :p

still needs some tidying and will need notches cut still for where I want the barwork to end up but progress is being made :)

Yeah I was pretty pissed to be honest... come whinge at me about a few hours grinding... admittedly a couple days in a row, but always at reasonable hours... like 1pm - 5ish so as not to be a nuisance and he comes and has a cry. Yet the other neighbor (behind complainer) has had chippies in sawing and hammering every weekend for the last month starting at 7.30am sat and sunday doesn't get complained at grrr... the joy of living in "rich whiteyville" aka mission bay lol.

Oh well, he can keep complaining... work needs to be done and I don't know a quiet way :)

Yeah, I have some paint to try out actually... some rust killing paint stuff from bunnings, I know they use it in the states to good effect so will give it a shot... soon as i am done with all the cutting/welding/grinding... need to get much better at shaping the patches...

Wow, I've been using the grinder until it's dark at home

Then again, I live in an area where "don't ask, don't tell" is the main rule for living

O and heres a pic of the f ball joint spacers i got made up for $75 pair by a local guy on the shore,
FILE0013.JPG

Ha gave me a tip aswell how to make up some rear spring spacers for cheaper aswell so will do a little research there. but the fronts all finished now. getting onto the rock sliders now.

HEY does anyone have an old thermal carby spacer that goes between carb and inlet manifold lying around? Im tryna find another one..

keep up the work mate

Ok advice please... I am in the process of thinking about installing a "snorkel" now the easiest (best as far as I can tell) way of doing this is to spin the aircleaner 180 degrees... everything still seems to line up ok doing this however it means the "crank case breathing system" aka a pipe coming out of the aircleaner on the passenger side which goes down into the fuel pump (im guessing?) no longer reaches...

is this actually important or is it just some sort of efficiency setup? If I am ok to remove/run without do I need to plug the holes, or am I better to leave them open?

Or... should I just put it back together the right way and work out another way i.e. run snorkel up drivers side...?

Edit: this thing

Needs to be attached, get another longer hose or join onto the original would be the easiest. Or move the fitting on the air cleaner. Other option is to run a longer flexi hose to your snorkel from the air cleaner in its original position

that just the engine breather.
have a measure up of the hose diameter and get a length from a hose place like HCD or something, and plumb it back to the air filter box or run it to a catch can.

Mine just goes to a small oil breather filter of it's own. Used to go to nothing at all

Many thanks, I figured just replacing the hose with a longer one was the second easiest option but thought I should make sure it wasn't just a silly pointless thing... will go on a hose hunt, need to get some flexy/rubber thingo anyway so hopefully will be able to suss all at the same time.

buy the look of the thingo on top of the thingymewatsit.
I wonder if the 1700 filter box will has the same bolt patern as your 1600. if it does you can have mine as ill no longer need it and it has a better angle to the jandel.
The intake on mine points to the r side of engine bay so will be easier to plumb snorkel up to drivers side. and wont have to change the crank case breather as its the same.
Ill evin flick ya my carb for puck all if ya wana put a 1700 carby on there itll giv it heaps of grunt mate heaps

Fairly sure the bolt pattern is the same, mine is the same as a 1.6 filter box I think.

And yeah Vince, chuck the 1.7 carby on. You can use my Lada as a reference. Dooooo eeeet!

(I'm fairly sure the 1.7 carb does actually make a difference over the 1.6 one  )

hmmmm... that would be a very useful thing there with the thingo pointing the other way... I would love to remove this from your stack of stuffs lol

Carb... hmmm I currently have a running Lada, that I just need to bolt/weld/cut things onto/off... I suspect changing the carb would leave me with a non running lada knowing my luck... I do like the idea of even a little more powahhhhhh though...

Damn you and all of your putting of ideas in my noggin

shouldn't be too hard to swap carbs.
we worked out sp has 1700 one on his 1600 so if between us we cant figure out where all the the widgets and gadgets go, can just look at his.
wont be an issue tho mate not much to em and the one that came off mine was working fine iv just gone to weber now. I believe the 1700 carb is a copy of the solex carb and according to the weber guy up silverdale he recons there not to bad a carb either.
hey check out trade me there is another lada come on ther body looks prity tidy might be worth it, prob would be easier to fix a bit of rust in the sills than going to the extent yours is at and its got wor and reg. 1 dolla reserve.
just another idea for ya noggin  :D

^ bidded on that one a couple of times, someone has an autobid though :(

Oh and Vince, maybe just stick with the 1.6 carb for now, if you find you need more powah then you can probably chuck a 1.7 carby on.

Just get this thing going! :D

Bloody hell, dude pulled the auction/will relist it next week lol

and yes I suspect for now just the 1.7 cleaner will be fine so I can rangi up a snorkel on the cheaps :) and get the bloody thing dirty... I must stop looking at it, having a ciggie, undoing things... bolting them back on... sitting down, looking at it some more... ciggie... repeat lol. Progress must be made this is getting silly

Ladeda... lemme know how i can get a hold of your box ;) lol... aircleaner thingamawhosit...

I recon im gona grab a guard roller and flair the crap outa them should look ok when fin and will eliminate the need for the rubber flairs

weber = shed loads more grunt what a difference it made now, like del fuego I gotta sort out a snorkel and air box to suit.

if ya do go down let me know if its still got:

front cv shafts. alwase good to have spairs.
rear diff. so i can set up front independantly supported diff with steel case
transfer case. so I can make up a rock crawler transfer box.
drive shafts. good for spairs as well.
steering box. to have spair as these wear out with bigger tyres on

^ You have basically described a section of my parts collection. I'll have a look and see how many parts I have. I think I have 2 full diffs, one part-disassembled one, about 2 or 3 TCs, a bunch of driveshafts, some old crap cvs, and maybe a steering box? I should really write down all the bits I have.

I'd be keen on doing some sort of a deal where if you guys need anyhting you can take it, and either give me a little bit of money, or source a replacement and buy that for me (at some stage after taking my one, it doesn't have to be straight away though).

Keen?
