I've got a 91 SWB Paj 2nd Gen and am thinking of putting disconnects in the front and rear. Anyone know of a link with some instructions on how?

i dont have a link, but if its your weekend toy, id just take them off. you could unbolt them (at the suspension components, leaving them still on the vehicle) and take it for a drive. that way you can decide if its accetable still.

Of all the off road vehicles I have owned the sway bar has been removed or was prior to my ownership.Slightly more body roll on road and off the Pantry is good anyway. :)

To get a WOF the technician required it to be refitted.

I never noticed any change in road handling when the swaybar finely fell off my 70

The front fell off my 80 series and it's definately scary on road just gotta slow it down a bit

Contemplating making a set of disconnects for the rear but it flexs damn well as it is.

I runs Jeeps (Wrangler and Cherokee) I remove the rears, front needed for on road use, Wrangler has disconnects for off roading, makes a big difference "25/30% more articulation" driving on road without them makes for a lot of wallowing driving.

Cherokee is used for green lanes and road miles so at present it remains... if I do tougher stuff with it then I'll prob get disconnects for it.

I have the Square LWB Prado.
Took the front off after my second trip out and it has never been back on. (10 yesr ago)
Used to reduce the flex heaps.
The rear is still in, made disconnects up. Feels soooo much better off road but feels terrible on road. Body roll galore.
Worse now running 35's, all that side wall flex.

I reckon ( IMHO) that those who have disconnected their swaybar and noticed no difference on road, must drive like nanas  My D21 Navara with standard ifs was worse on road without swaybar, but little differance off road without, as ifs only had 5 inches of travel at wheel centreline. I found the swaybar could twist this much comfortably. I would love a swaybar with quick disconnects on my current set up, but am restricted for room up front where I want it. With 12 inch coilovers, I'm getting 19 inches travel at wheel centreline :D Can you imagine a swaybar trying to handle this :? But... its a handful on the road now, and I'd hate to swerve in an emergency  It still got cert thou :? I honestly think it's all dependent on what you have, what you expect, and how you drive it. Rip it off I say :D
If you break it... build it stronger.

I'm still debating whether to remove the swaybars on the 80 series, leave them on (have mount extensions) or try to make some disco's for it. Handles ok at the moment, but with longer shocks I'm getting from oz, the swaybars will more than likely restrict travel, and possibly damage bushes etc at full travel.

Who from ChCh has got a cert without swaybars, or with disconnects? Need a cert soon, but want to keep it straight foward for the cert guy (someone from ChCh who travels to Blenheim for certing)

I've had the front swaybar off for a while on my 80 series (it broke the mounts) so I only have the rear and it's quite a handful on 35s!!

I thought there was something seriously wrong with the handling so I had someone hop on the sills and bounce and the rear sway bushes have about 2-3 mm play!! thats a lot of momenment once it's transferred to the top of the body!

So my suggestion is, if you ditch the front bar - make sure the rear bar can handle the extra jandle!

My new bj74 has newish sway bar bushes in it (theyve done about 3000ks) an it handles like the interislander ferry  its terrible at cornering. it does have about 30" road tyres on it tho. My last 40 handled way better on the road on 33" mudzillas

Thanks for the tip. Will look at extending the rear a bit more to suit the lift, and possibly do the front too. Doesn't see much off roading (or any use at all ATM) so road manners are more important I guess.

Just disconnected the sway bars off my terrano and went and had a play around red rocks, and wow what a difference. I can now get over some tracks like they are nothing but didn't even get half way up last time I was there.

Its ok on the road with them out, but as I do high road KMS I will leave them in and just take the 15min it takes to pull them out each time I hit the trails.

well it works well as it limits the rear flex and makes the front move better but , omly standard hight arms very light didn't like the strain

I removed them both from my 4" lifted IFS surf, i did however have modified HD Pajero rear shocks in the front and HD cruiser shocks in the rear which made it ride extremely hard but, it handled very well on 33 KL71's on cruiser offset rims. It handled better than a bog standard surf with sway bars, despite its hight.

How have you lifted the front 4"? Mine was a dog without the front sway bar , with after market torsions, OME shocks and only 2" body lift.
truck dove into ever corner . Harder front shocks would just make the front work worse offroad , if that is possible
Also couldn't see any differnce offroad , with or without front sway bar.

My rear one is out in my terrano, and it made a pretty big difference, Just wondering whether the front is worth taking out?

i used to own one of these (surf that is)and i got sick and tried of replacing them, so i found a nice piece of 3" 4140 round bar and atacked it for about 3hrs on the mill and made then 2mm thicker not that it meed it being 4140.
they never broke after that

(not being a smart ass, just a question)
I have previously broken 1 mount.
But before & after each off road trip i check them & everything else is looking ok.
But thanks for asking
This is one of the second things to remove from my Isuzu Mu and I hardly notice a difference apart from when 4WD going in ruts and stuff, but other than that nothing.

took my rear one off on my kzn130 surf as id sheared the bolt off in the mount and couldnt be arsed drilling and retapping to have it only snap again, made and awesome difference offroad and little to none offroad, so when i was replacing bent pitman and idler arm in the w.e noticed my front sway bushes had disapeared a long time ago i ripped the front one out, so much mre flex off road, taken a couple of days to get used to the new handling characteristics its taken on, but definately worth taking them out unless your always towing stuff

Gidday guys, new to this forum.

After thoughts on whether you'd get more flex from a LWB LJ78 Prado, with both swaybars in

or

a LN130 IFS surf with sway bars removed

Cheers
