p.s. if anyone is keen for tommorows trip we will be at the south river bank, west of motorway bridge, directly across from jetboat ramp at 11am. could be a bit of trial and error thou nuting out a good route.

cheers..

I'm just wondering why it's OK to lead a trip tomorrow, but you won't do one on Saturday unless ECAN gives their blessing. Isn't that a bit contradictory? What's the difference between Wed and Sat, apart from 3 days, if ECAN say no?

because it isnt a planed trip. its an info gathering exercise... to see track condition for different trucks.. i have stated the deal already with this trip.. cheers

It doesn't matter if it's a planned trip or not though in my opinion. If ECAN forbid the use of the area, then I don't see how you could get away with saying to the ranger, "its not a planned trip"

you have it all wrong mate. i am planning a trip... i am sticking to stop backs.... i am following the rules as far as acces goes... i will only be checking out where we allowed to go and seeing if there are areas that will restrict the trip enough to make it no worth doing on saterday. the last thing im going to do is, go and get busted doing something that i shouldn't be doing and thats the point of tommorow. sorry i thought that was clear.

albundy wrote:Have you considered the Ashley track into the Okuku confluence and upstream from there. You will get plenty of mud, river crossing, tight trees to manouvere through, rocks to go rock hopping over all in a dedicated area. not much further north then the waimak. Selwyn is dry and boring. We lead fundraising trips down there for those with NO 4wd experience what so ever.

I'd be keen for the Ashley track on sat if thats what you deside.

So we sit here and watch you guys go into an area we know ecan is trying to keep 4wds out of  Not trying to stir anything here just passing on info. As has been mentioned if not in this thread then on others that we have to play by the rules if we want to maintain access to these areas. I've been going out to the Waimak in buggies, bikes and 4wds for well over 10 years and have done the southside of that riverbed 100's of times. As mentioned in an earlier post, i have been spoken to by the Ecan officer out at the river.

This is how Newbies learn stuff, so don't think that we're trying to hassle you cause we ain't  Just passing on that facts and a bit of our experience, sure we could say nothing. but whos helping who if i do that. :?: :?: :?:

I for one am grateful for the heads up i'd rather no where i can and can't go before getting in trouble for being somewhere i shouldn't. im happy to explore and play in the places we can rather than piss them off and find our selves baned from everywhere. So long as its not having a go at me, or anyone else as far as im concerned the more info the better. cheers
(i think once again we can probably put it down to missunderstanding what someones saying, just reading a post can be taken many ways im sure often its just taking the piss but hard to no if people are serious)

ok guys i have the word.
we meet up with the area ranger who is in charge of organising areas for 4wd use. his name is simon woods (e-can ranger). he was fairly informitive about whats going on. as for south side trip, i dont think it is worth the hassel as there are areas they dont want 4wd's (4wding) from the creek crossing just west of motorway its a horse riding area so limited vehical access. there is about to be signs put up in the river bed just north of that area for nesting of a rare bird. so off limits to 4wd and cars for that fact. as for stop banks, its still a bit gray. but i have been told they dont like any driving unless on a designated road. i.e. shingle or atleast graded to some degree. so sections of the track cant be accesed from one or both end in between the groyns as it may lead down a stop bank, not on a formed road. he went on telling me about ho the stop banks are important for flood protetion and so on.
now aleast its been heard from the source.

so the ashley it is i guess. so we need to work out a time to suit and a meeting point as i have never been to the ashley to 4wd i dont know where to go and am hopeing someone can take over for me to organise that stuff. i am good for whenever and where ever.. :D

i couldn't end without posting some pics so here you are. enjoy.

Abosolutely Awsome day!!, fine weather with lots of mud, kudos to Hilux-Happy for a great trip that pushed my truck to it's limits, I learned a lot and found out what some of the 'real-world' limitations of my truck are (bigger tyres and greater ground clearance are a must)

Considering he doesn't have any diff locks, I was surprised just what he could achieve in his 'IFS' surf.... For those of any doubt,... yes, he is completely MAD!! but definitely has the balls!!

No stop-banks were harmed at any time during fun!!

I will start a thread latter today about a trip down the Ashley to the Okuku confluence then up to the bridge and to the pub. I will lead the trip and Hiriklux will come along to help out. Thinking about lunchtime as I have some shit to do in the morning.
