Ive been told its Transit owned, and 4x4s a definitely playing in there, there are no gates or signs or anything, We went to go for a quick explore to see if it was any good after hearing about it about a month ago on a way back from another mission. But we turned back after 500m as we decicded that if we kept going we would proberly spend the night there as the track was starting to get very muddy, entertaining and fun
I can confirm that its Transit (now NZTA) owned land. I had noticed last time I was up there for work a convoy of rough looking 4wd`s (not road legal and very definitley not insured). I did see that the locked gate down the bottom had been interefered with and the fence cut - I didn`t think much of it.
Thanks for the reminder - I`ll get the fence and gate fixed. It is private property and people would be liable for tresspass for unauthorised use and access. I`ll forward this to the appropriate person at work and see what comes of it...
As for Abbots Hill, I cannot speak for the DCC, but from memory theres water and possibly sewer pipes under there which are shallow, and at risk of damage from vehicle loads. The road is closed permanently to vehicle traffic.

That's hardly private - NZTA is owned by the government
(
not that that means people can traspe through whenever they like of course).

not as such.
best bet is send me (& others, or start a thread) a PM and we can get a few of us together and go to the likes of the old man range or serpentine track for the weekend

Have you thought about joining kiwi4x4.org.nz and setting up/ promoting the Dunedin "Branch", this way you could run organised and insured trips?
[disclaimer: assuming this is ok with kiwi4x4 ovbiously]
As a club you would get a better response approaching councils and landowners?

Why not just join the clubs that already exist in the Dunedin area? They give you access to lots of tracks, and if you join the land rover owners club they have there own land to play at near Waitati

joining a club is a good idea, but i think what he is meaning is a place handy that you can go to almost anytime of the day, any day of the week for as long as you like....
unlike a lot of areas down here we have none, all of the tracks and areas we had the council has shut. and the areas where others play you run the risk of getting a fine/ tresspass served if caught
we have nowhere that joe bloggs public can go and just have a play for a couple of hours.

callum have you heard whats happened to anyone thats been caught?, ive heard nothing and have noticed that theres been a few people out there lately.
an idea might be to ask a farmer if he has a rough gully or block on his farm that you could have a play on.
