A question to anyone that's mounted a large amount of spot lights on their 4x4.

I'm planning on mounting 8 on mine, 6 on top of the roll cage and 2 on the bull bar..

Can anyone tell me some problems they've come across and how they got round them please?

Thanks.
Pete.

Good point.
Do you have a set of spots yourself Sadam?
I'm planning on having the ones mounted on the top of the roll cage moveable or foldable. When I'm not using them or have the soft top on they will lie horizontal.

I seem to have enough trouble getting my truck through vegetation and crap without having to worry about spots up on top getting in the way as well  :?

Yeah make up some sort of easily detachable rack to mount them on so you can take them on and off easily like you see the winch challenge guys do when they compete in their night stages

You might even be able to do something so you can also lay them back so their horizontal and a bit more out of the way if you haven taken them off?

*edit* just saw your horizontal comment

Hi Pete, Do a Google search on Hella HID work lights, we run these on our vehicles at work that work through the night. They turn night into day. Hella Xenon HID work lights ( High Intensity Discharge ) draw under 3 amps and are 2.5 times brighter than conventional lamps. Warning they are not cheap. Two of these up top and two Hella 4000 or equivalent mounted on the top of the bull bar and you would have all the candle power you would want. TWL on Blenheim Rd have a good range of Hella Lighting.

IT'S NOT THE AMOUNT YOU HAVE GOT, IT'S HOW YOU USE IT,

Thanks Fitzy.
That last comment. I hear that from my partner all the time.
Back to the lights. Pete Munro has those HID lights on his truck. He LOVES em! But it always comes down to the mighty dollar.
The 8 IPF spots that I have brought cost $200 each setting me back $1600. The HID spots you are talking about cost $850 each. I know I'd only need half the amount on my truck but that still works out at $3400 for 4 spots. I also know they take approx 20 seconds to get up to full power. I want full power straight away.
For about half the price I have around the same candle power. I know they draw more current but I'll be working around that problem.

Just did a re think on the soft top bracing.
The current bracing will give the back edge a sharp angle on the corners.

Image

This is the angle I'm looking for.

This follows the contours of the original shape better.

So back to the drawing board we go.

Pete,

I know money seams to be no issue for you but dont buy a pre-made top. Go to a marine & Auto upholstery place. Should only be $500 for a custom set up  .

PS. My truck will still smoke you no matter how much you spend  Its all about the loose nut at the wheel.

But is yours road legal bro? 8) All the same, I'll line up against you on the 1/4 mile anytime mate. But off road I'm sure you'll smoke me. I'm easy to beat. Ask anyone that was at the last Sheffield Mud plug event.

As far as the soft top goes. Money is a issue. I don't want anything to flash. I just want something that looks original. The guy that re upholstered my boat did a mint job. He's doing the soft top and knows his stuff. But he's relying on my fabricator to build the frame.

So when is a good time for you for a 1/4 mile run? Mate, if mine doesn't beat yours on the 1/4 mile I'll be bolting on a supercharger to make sure it does. (as well as wheelie bars)

I'm with him

get a custom one made

if you do bracing like that, then how do you remove it??, and it looks damn ugly

mine has a single removable bar that comes off the back stays on the cage and goes up towards the back for the soft top to attach to

will post some pics shortly

get one made, buying those shitty ones from the states will end up being a nightmare when it comes time to try and make it fit.

pics to follow..................................

righto, I was trying to do it straight away, but some wanker was trying to attack my computer with a virus, so after I cleaned my undies and tried to fix it, the time was late and have been busy since, but here they are Pete.

first one is a pic of the top, nice and flat on the roof line, not rising up like those gay yankee ones, if I was to do it again, I would put windows in the side so you can see as you are about to reverse off the side of the track where you can't see the bottom.

Image

the next one is a shot of part of the removable bar after a wee accident that made it easier to see it, only the stitching broke, so it was an easy fix

Image

the last one you have to look at closely or blow it up to see the bar attached to the back stays. It is folded up to the top of the rear rollbar just behind the seats. To remove it I only have to undo 2 screws and take it off, the rest of the top is held on with dome clip thingies and has been tested at over 160 kph.

Image

anything else ya wanna know, then just ask.

I definitely believe you would be better off getting one custom made to suit your truck.

Cheers skid!
I like the way yours is rounded on the corners at the back edge. Way better than the first attempt on mine.
Yeah windows would help things. Still looks cool though.

I'll post some more pictures once mine gets to the soft top stage. (hopefully this year)

I forgot to mention, that it slides round trees nicely too, without ripping.

trick is to keep everything close the lines of the truck to minimise damage.

but in saying that, its only going on ya show pony truck anyway

Some new mods done by Corey today. :D
I'm getting excited about flicking the switch on with these new spot lights.
Two removable gun rests are still to be installed on the roll cage between the lights.
It'll be the hunting/offroading machine from hell. 8)

Looks great Pete.

How come you have gone for two 12's instead of the 16?

I did the math and you get a lot more airflow with a good 16.

Cheers

Cheers Matt.
I'm sure i brought the highest 16 inch CFM fan on the market. There was nothing faster..

The stock LS1 5.7 litre V8 motor in a Holden Clubsport (same as what's in my FJ40) runs a 12 inch and a 14 inch fan making a total of 26 inch in CFM terms. Two 12 inch fans will make a total area of 24 inches. That's only 2 inches short of the stock 26 inches. The 16 inch area just didn't give the same amount of CFM as 24 inch. Even though I've added a alloy radiator to the cooling system I've still had heating issues. If I stay closer to the stock dimensions i'm sure to have less trouble. After all, I'm sure they put a lot of research in the stock setup.

Re: petefj40's new mods

Two 12's will give a surface area of approximately 15% more than a single 16 but what I found was that the CFM of the 12's was generally a lot less than the 16's so overall if you calculate airflow and area you are better off with the single.

Most manufacturers go with twins because of space constraints rather than anything else I suspect.
The biggest impact on airflow seems to be the push/pull setup and if you are running as a puller then a proper shroud will increase airflow significantly.

One thing I considered was the reliability issue, with two fans you are covered in a failure situation wheras with a single you are caught short.

Cheers
Matt.

You maybe right but I find that one hard to swallow. As I said. I'm sure Holden did plenty of research into the stock setup. So I'm sticking as close to that as pos.

It would depend on the speed and blade design of both sizes of fans as to which is better. What are the 12in fans from, i have a repco 12in with lots of thin rectangular blades with a slight curve and a unknown 12in with 4 large blades with a slight curve on my 350 and it seems to be working fine.
But i will be upgrading to a set of dual v8 falcon fans as they are a better fan wrecker wants $250+, if i could get a taurus fan that would be better.

They are thick edged stock 12 inch fans from a 2002 Holden VX V8. The blades aren't thin and flimsy like the ones you've shown there. If mine ever get under water they'll cut through the muddy water, not snap trying to cut through it like those ones look like they would. 8)
