I called it "Barker 272 special" It was my own design using sheet metal and different body parts and built on a Ford Customline chasis and the 272 motor that had 4 twin throat carbs ,extractors, planed heads and 3 quarter race cam. When pushed it would do 8 mpg but in those days fuel was cheap.
OUR MOTTO WAS " V8s NEVER LATE, 6 IN LINE A WASTE OF TIME"

NICE love it ,

ive set my truck up so it limits when it gets to hot and kills the engine when oil pressure gets to low (not sure if thats a good thing yet .. but its saved my engine once sofar)
have you considered making a mk3 cortina center comsole style guage set ? to keep yourself nice and clear .. with maybe a row of red lights to give fair warning ?
Hi Wayne
I agree that lights will quite often give a better warning but I like the guages because they give an earlier warning.
The pyrometer, Air pressure, and boost have to stay as guages. The oil temperature is good because this is the first sign that the radiator is clogged up with mud. and then I only have oil pressure and water temperature.
They are easily read and out of the way enough even if they look messy so I cant be bothered to move them.

Hi Richard i have been watching this thread alot and am intrigued by the amount of work you have done.
Wondering about your bullbars whether you built them yourself or bought them if so where from, also could you possibly put up a photo of where your winch is mounted please.
Cheers for the thread.

Hi Ants
The bullbar was on the truck when it was imported. It is a Smittybilt from the USA
I cant seem to be able to really show how it is mounted. I have set it hard back so I still have a good approach angle.

2 bolts go right through the bar and 2 are through plate welded to the bar

The bar is mounted above chassis height so I have tied it along the chassis for extra strength. I have triple blocked off it so has been tested to over 20,000lbs

Hope these help
Cheers Richard

Richard, while on the subject of your winch, what battery do you use?

I have a single Hella crankmaster CM1000 cca battery and a 70amp alternator and have never had a winch give trouble with a flat battery or overheating.
When winching I put both lockers in and using 1st gear winch and drive at the same time.

I used to get alot of cracking in the body so fitted holden double valve springs under all the body mounts to allow more flexing. It has been like that for over 5 years now and the body doesn't crack now.

Shit, I've got that problem, didn't realise it was such an easy fix Richard. Did you just have them laying around or source from wrecker/engine reconditioner.

My one cracked where the front guards joined the body and straight up above the front guard mounts and at the back of cab by the top of the rear window. They seemed to be the main stress points.

PS Hi Al
I just happened to have some commodore valve springs at home and used those. They are the double ones but any valve springs would do. I used 8.8 metre bolts with nylock nuts.
On my first certification they questioned them but then couldn't see why not and they have now gone through 3 certs

Richard, what gear do you normally use offroad (up slippery banks and through bogs etc)?

turoa wrote:Richard, what gear do you normally use offroad (up slippery banks and through bogs etc)?
With the 35s on I use 2nd in low box for slippery banks and bogs because I have a lot more control to shut off and gain momentum again. With the 35s it is impossble to kill in 2nd.
With 33s I quite often use third but tend to run out of power so 35s work a lot better and give better momentum.
Im still running 4.5 diffs.
Cheers Richard

Hi Shane.
No I dont. I have the chain driven R15 box that has the lower ratio.
To show the difference Gears make here is a video clip of the steep slippery bank on the No 6 track at Westport.Very few trucks drive this. Out of the 3 last trips only 2 trucks have made it. A couple of trucks have slipped back and rolled here.
The 1st attempt I have is on 33s and 2nd gear, but miles too much power and not enough momentum.
Andi Delis then drives it in the 3.9 V8. I then change up to 3rd and get up but have no power left to shut off if needed.
The 3rd time I am on 35s and 2 gear and with this setup still have heaps of power but also momentum.
Chris Hollis trys in a 4.2 landcruiser with lockers but only gets about a 3rd of the way up.

Cheers Richard
PS Next time Jafa is down we will have show him this track

I have just found an old photo of the Rough River at the confluence of Mirfins creek on the Westcoast.
Real Jafa country . Big boulders and 1 metre deep water. No one else was game to cross
Higgie and my self on the other side.

Talked to Wayne ( Mudzilla) tonite and the plan at this stage is to come up for labour weekend and then stay at Wayne's the next week and do Thompsons etc.
Janet is real keen but wants to leave Klaus (the Shepherd) at home so she can Video the trip and have a relaxing holiday.
