At this point nothing is set in concrete. The only thing definate is staying with Wayne (Mudzilla) at Te Araha and doing Thompsons and a couple of other tracks in the Waikato.

There are other tracks in the middle of the North Island as well but are awaiting for confirmation.

Keeping options open at this time.

Lots of trucks are going through the Bulletproof Chasm track now and it looks as if the road always existed.

This is our first working bee in feb 2005 after the destruction of the big flood.

You can see what we were faced with.

You rightly talk a lot about 4wd recovery in a safe manner. I dont however see the use of chainsaw chaps when you are using your saw.
After i got mine I cut them up high whilst i was an hour from civilisation. Am very pleased I used them then and always do now. Femural arteries bleed you out pretty damn quick!

Please note I am not trying to Diss you, just to be positively constructive and to highlight safety.

I worked in the forestry as a logger until I had a bad accident in 1974. In those days no one wore chaps so I have never really thought about it.

I am not making excuses because you are right, and I am glad you have pointed out the danger of not wearing them and I am sorry if I have given others the message.

when out to waynes last night for a banana split and a chat .. go tto see some of your vid's look awesome richard
the one thing out of all the footage i got to watch was the comprehensive voice overs :d and that fantastic backround music :D

Glen (NJV6) PM ed me the other day and said they opened alot of the tracks at Haast in the late 80s.

For anyone who hasn't been there it is big country and awesome scenery.

Barn Bay is the most southern point a person can drive to on the West Coast of the South Island.

A vid from 2004 with the Canterbury Landrover owners club.

Been at home today so here is another track.

A number of clubs have had several goes to do this track up to the pylon under the Karamea bluffs but have run out of daylight getting to it.

Marc Crackett ( Uboat) and brother Steve and myself are the only ones to have done it.

The first video shows the track leading to it.

2nd vid shows heading up. Very very slippery clay in the wet.

3rd vid shows the descent with Steve having a close shave with a nasty accident as his truck slipped back and nearly got him.

those clay tracks remind me of where i live, even with simex's the clay is very hard to clear off the tires!!

The swampers on my truck are just the standard TSL's 33x12.5x15 on some 15x10 whitespokes with heavy duty tubes. Poor old 2.8 cant do them justice :oops: really even with 4.88 diffs, that why im rebuilding the truck with more grunt :lol: .

Im leaving myself wide open here, but these are typical of 2 different kinds of trucks in this video of the little Totara.

English-lack of quality

Nissan - no clearance

Looked like the Nissan was running 33's combine that with that rock, no lockers and what looks like a lack of experince in river work due to the excesive wheel spin and you will get stuck :mrgreen:

Like to see a Toyoda on 31's with a newbie driving get over that rock :wink:

And yes I bite well :lol: :lol:

I agree with you 100% PR.
And Tim if that is who you thought it was, then he sure wasn't showing any signs of knowing how to drive a river in that clip :wink:

What it shows to me is that you have to start somewhere, and it is going on trips like that, that help you decide what needs to be done to traverse that sort of country.
All you newer guys who want to push the envelope need to do trips that are just a wee bit more difficult each time if you want to get up to the level of trips that Richard does. It's the old adage, "you gotta walk, before you can run" :wink:

No that was not Johnny Reay in that Nissan.

Johnny was on the very first trip as a passenger with Flag, and on that trip he was a passenger with me.

Xmas 07 we took Johnny's Nissan through there for the 1st time. At that time he didn't have a winch and didn't have the 35ETs fitted so he sat in behind me and I towed him without stopping right across the bogs to the steep bank.

Most Nissans we have taken through have broken steering or Panhard rods and Johnny didn't escape either.

thats why mines solid steel now, tie rods crome moly, still have rear lower arms to mod

While the DVD of Johnny Reay is in the computor , Here is are a couple of clips of the the 1st return trip through Tailings at Xmas 07

We had a hell of a job getting out of Pigeon Creek with 2 boulders in the wrong place.

The complete return trip took about 5.5 hrs

Couldn't agree more Richard hence why I put pressure pipe sleeve over the steering arm, and angle iron on the rear panhard and on the lower trailing arms. I stil;l carry a spare steering arm and rear panhard rod as spares. haven't broken any since strengthening.
