Yep the new hair dryer should be on and I might have a five link front end by then too just have to finish all the bar work on the missus pajero

Because my 5l has been modified with supercharger ,extractors, and fuel pump I like to regulary check for anything going wrong.
So today the glow plugs came out for their annual check. While they were out I gave it a compression check.

I fitted the supercharger 5 years ago at 36000 as I wanted the motor to run in properly first.

Here are the compression figures over time

After driving it with modified exhaust and intake for a couple of years

At 18,000 585 590 590 590
At 42,000 615 611 608 613 in 2004 after supercharger fitted
At 63,000 603 600 595 602 Jan 2007
At 83,600 595 590 595 595 With luke warm motor after sitting for 1.5 hrs

The motor has now done 47500 since fitting the supercharger . Compressions still good and still running 25lbs oil pressure hot at idle so I don't think blowing the motor has had any bad results

i get 230 psi on mine .. but then its a petrol

While checking glow plugs and compression I see the intercooler needs abit of work

One of the big disadvantages of a top intercooler is that the fins get flattened with branches and shit getting in there and being shaken around with the motor shake.

A few days before going to Ralleywoods last weekend I decided to modify the Steering because the drag link was getting bent on every 2nd trip.

I have now fitted a BJ60 drag link with the bigger tapered pins and the springs for shocking both ends.

To gain hieght I have now fitted the drag link on the top side of the left hand king pin arm which lifts it about 75mm. It also keeps it in a straighter line whichs makes the steering lighter as well. Because the tapered pin is bigger than the hilux arm we only had to lathe a 4 degree taper from the top side.

The steer damper is also in a better line now as well with BJ 60 arm




Came back from Ralleywoods and it is still like brand new and not the slightest bend.

PS My new diff parts arrived in NZ on Wed so will soon be able to strenghten the rear diff.

Sick of wearing out my Simexs on the road

After getting home from Rallywoods on Monday I have decided to modify th deck so that I can carry the 35 ET simexs on the back.

Out with angle grinder today and good bye guards. Amazing the amount of room they take.

what are your plans with the guards?
ive just been working on mine and thinking about guard clearance, im making fibreglass front guards and want to chop the rear

I have a 3inch lift in the deck so the guards do nothing except make it hard to load the deck. Better to have more storage area.
Next week end will weld new panels in.

Have you got a front locker and do you have CV breaking issues and are you running standard parts in your front end?, You know my uncle Vic that has the twin locked safari and he reakons with the front locker in he's popping Cv's all day and he's quiet a smooth driver, Well usually anyway.!! I've got a twin locked safari on 35" silverstones and have only ever broken one CV. What type of hubs is he using, maybe that's the problem, hubs are stronger then CV's???? I have gone through 4 sets of hubs though. Hubs are way cheaper then CV's.

Yea im not sure why he breaks them, I just re-call him saying that was the reason he didnt use the front air locker very much and also that is was capable enough with just the rear locker used and with Simex's, But i do know he runs the factory Nissan hubs.

I just wondered how the Hilux CV's were holding up in trucks like Richards that really get used and driven in hard yakka stuff.

To answer both questions. I have done a number of trips with Al and Vic. Vics Is a lot more competitive and aggressive than Al and uses his right foot more which is probably why he breaks CVs. He is also heavier and has more power.

Back on topic. I have PZ70 cruiser Front diff with the bigger CVs and have only broken 1 in the last 7-8 years and even then it was my fault by slamming into a big rock under power.

People think I am a hard driver but that is not true because I drive the hilux more like a tractor and never drop my clutch while at high revs.
I also only use the front locker when I know there is slip on the ground

Yea thats true Vic's has a lot more power than a N/A TD42 and also more than a factory turbo TD42T model and he is known to be a aggressive driver and yes that truck is VERY heavy with all the gear he carrys around.

Once he is back from touring around OZ ill be heading down to Lyford to have another trip with him and Steph, They might leave Vic's truck in OZ and use Steph's GQ Shorty while they are back.

I'm sure it's been mentioned in this thread but why did you choose the supercharger over the factory L series turbo?

No spooling obviously, what boost are you running and when does it come in?

Just weighing up options - I have a friend with a 5L for sale and I have a 2LT and I'm impressed with the performance of your motor and swapping the turbo gear over isn't too hard.

The choice of motors and what to do was a hard one.

I wanted a low K motor and there was a choice of two. A 1KZ with intercooler and 14000ks for $4500 or the 5L with 9000ks for just under $8000.

I do alot of deep water so I didn't like an Electronic pump so this went against the 1Kz . I also dont like the back pressure caused by a Turbo and the heat build up as a result.

I also don't like the turbo lag for 4 wheeling.

The 5L on the other hand had a manual pump so that appealed to me. I thought that I would risk modifying one.

The first thing I did was to throw away the exhaust and design Extractors to suck out the heat. I increased the exhaust ports from 35 to 38mm with 2.5 inch exhaust. After this I threw the inlet system away and fitted the Supercharger to blow cold air into the motor and give a good cross flow of air.

Blow in one side and suck it out the other side of the motor is my motto.

After this I fitted a top off a 2LT fuel pump to give extra fuel boost

I like the Supercharger because I have 4lbs of boost at idle and it quickly rises through 1000revs which give instant power and control 4 wheeling. I am running 10lbs into the intercooler.

I have now done 75000 ks without any adverse things showing up and am completely happy with the setup. I am running 4.5 diffs with 35inch ET simexs and dont run out of power where all my friends with the 1kzs are using 4.8 diffs and dont have the quick response I have.

There are lots of trucks like Jafa's that out perform me and there setups may be worth considering. Mine is just a bit better than average club truck.

A bit of an anti climax .

My new Yukon Ring & pinion gears arrived this week to find they are not what I need for the latest stronger diff housing

You can make it work by add O.241 inch shims but not ideal.

The diff head is the same as the V6 and has the 8.125 diff instead of the 8 inch hilux so now have to wait for a new parts to arrive from the USA.
