Yeah I wondered about that after i did that post, have sent off a few emails to those guy's and Spidertrax asking for measurements just to make double sure.

Might just end up with those press on ring's and toothpick front axles

If you are keen for a set , price up getting the shafts shortened . The spline would have to be extended and the c clip grove redone . I would say you would be able to do that on the short spined end just fine , probably have to get the shaft softened , machined , then hardened again .

those Cromos are for the WT Samurai model.40-50mm wider per side. Asked the same question myself last year. They are 26 spline so require a rear diff head and i don't think to CV's are interchangeable with the NT 21 spline front axles.

Watch out for all the steering stuff as well its all for left hand drive

  hahahaha, ahhhhhhh, they must get sooooo sick of people emailing asking them the same question

Meh, just have to stay open in the front and run the rings on the CV's :D

Or buy this, strip what i want and part the rest out

had a friend mention to me the other day that he had some hilux diffs in his shed

here you are saying, bloody hell, I've already stated my reasons for sticking with the suzuki width etc etc etc

but wait, heres the catch

he said something about these diffs being shortened to fit a 413

if you are keen, I can pursue this investigation further

Nah skiddy, It's the monster diff head on the Hilux axles thats the problem not the width. Width is always good in a Zook :D :D

Cheers Bob, but same deal, axles only for the Samurai diffs.

Ultimately, down the line I want to:

 Squeeze a set of 33X10.5 Silverstone MT117's under it on standard axles. (apparently they measure 31.9" )

 Run twin air lockers, as i am OVER the autolocker. The autolockers better than a welded diff, but they drive you nuts trying to maneuver in tight space's, especially in a light truck, 50 point turn's anyone??.

To run the bigger tyres and a locker in the front, it will need the front end strengthening.

Looks like it's just going to be a case of using the Spidertrax Birf Rings and being fawkin carefull when the front lockers in

Brian Howat can make you bigger axles so you can run the maximum dia that will fit through the diff seal and let you use the bigger spline with the rear side gears.
I ran those spidertrax rings in my old suzuki and never had any issues.(although I thing the guy that owns it now might have snapped a axle, but not broken any cvs)

Its the difference between the sewing machine turning 32" tyres over 35" tyres for the same ground clearance

Less power loss turning the 32's, and less weight

Shave the diff a little and you have more clearance than a Hilux on 36's

I'm going to convert mine to WT housings , NT spring spacing eventually.

A bit more track, better flex leverage, more steering clearance, good after market parts available. problem is WT samurai parts are quite hard to come by in NZ.

problem with shaving the diffs is that if it ever becomes an a class trials wagon again then it will be illegal

RAD

It struck me today that if you convert to WT axles, run Chromoly front end, the only thing your likely to have trouble with are rear axles.

If your really unlucky you might break a rear axle, but the front end should be all good. Diff heads and R&P are interchangeable AFAIK, different ratio and flange size but.

Off to Outers to check that out, brb.............

Re: WEAPON

you can get Cromo rear axles for the WT, Calmini make them i think.

WT samurai , 3.6 ratio, 26 spline rear , 21 spline front , larger flange bolt spacing than a NT, different drive shaft flange , no transfer hand break.

NT SJ413 , 3.9 ratio , 26 spline rear , 21 spline front.

both diff heads are interchangeable into WT and NT housings.
You can also run Vitara front diff 4.56 and 5.12 R&P in the SJ housing with the use of a spacer ring.

Madaz wrote::idea: Was quite common to twist samurai back axles until I changed to a full floating setup.....

im interested in this how did you do the conversion?

Use the front spindles and make a adaptor plate to hold them to the diff.
Then get custom axles made.
This adds another 25mm to each side of the diff

The calmini axles are cheap at about $160 us but net gossip says they are a little brittle and break . Time will tell if I break them I will be going the full floater route as Madaz touched on , it was time and $$$ that made me try the h/duty axles .

i looked at shaving the zuk diffs but the gained clearance is not worth it , in my installation :( . Being shaved for a rally truck is not really an issue as you have said you would have an air locker so would need another set of axles to swap in and out :)

Scrounged some aluminium mesh and threw together a cargo barrier tonight.

Image

Image

Its just cable tied in place so its easy to pull out. It doesn't actually serve any kind of purpose other than to satisfy a rule, but its there, its in and it only gets in the way a little bit.

With all this rain i thought i had better have a look at the computer and see how water proof its mounting was.

Pleased i did

The loom wasn't long enough to get it into the glove box, so had to use plan "B".

I wrapped it a thick plastic sample bag and vacuum sealed it, wrapped the the plastic bag in rubber and tape so it won't chafe through the bag, stuffed the whole lot into the box, and then emptied 2/3rd's of a tube of silicon sealant around the join on the lid, and around the hole in the box where the cables go in. Looks poo's, but i bet its water proof

Image

Also tried some 31 X 10.5 15 Simex Centipede's on for size. Was far to wet to get down to the official flex test drain, so had to improvise

Image

Image

Bit of rubbage, but they do measure at 32.2 or something like that

lovin the Zuk with those Simex on it?
How well do they bag with the light weight.

Looks like you need to move the diff forward 20ml or so, to clearance the firewall a little more. Are you running bump stop extensions in the front?

id be concerned about condensation buildup in the plastic bag for the computer.
My plan is to vent the water tight ECU box into a breather system connected to the snorkel. Should keep a slight vacuum in the ECU box.

Oooops, Central TV is a week behind with their episode's, so it's on next Friday, 8:30pm.

It was on Free View, on Stratos last Thursday.

Its Episode 209 anyways, and 210 is the coverage of Manukau Winch Challenge.

Re: WEAPON

Post by DieselBoy »

So since the Weapon has got the blingy twin ARB airlockers and HD Compressor, it really needed something doing to the front end to handle the extra load.

I had the lockers in at the Taupo winch challenge, but due the stage's being about as hard as a Laurie Sanson fun rally in the middle of summer, i never really got to test them properly or put the driveline through it's pace's. It all hung together though, mainly due to the fact I had taken my entire collection of spare Cv's and axles with me, god o'l Murphy's law eh

Nothing eventuated with the quest for chromolly axles. They don't make them for the standard Jimny axle, only the W/T Samurai.

Not to be beaten, I picked up a set of Spidertrax Birfield Rings, choose my best pair of CV's and got the rings pressed onto the CV's.

CV with Spidertrax ring next to slightly greesy standard CV:
Image

The logic behind the rings is that 99% of failure is doe to the bell of the CV exploding under load. The rings provide further strength to the Bell preventing that from happening. The tooth pick axle shaft just blows instead

The rings once pressed onto the CV joint take up the entire space inside the housing and more.

Grinding is required. This is what you start with:
Image

You have to grind the ridge where the machined area meets the bare casting smooth for a start, just to get the CV's with the rings fitted in there, and then keep going untill the CV joint rotate's freely and doesn't bind on the housing on full lock.

Lower area finished:
Image

Upper area all done:
Image

I gave it a little more clearence than needed just be safe, but its still a bloody tight fit
Image
Image

Gave it a decent thrash at the weekend and it all hung together, so I must have got it right :D :D :D

Hey I recognize that place Pete, Mudzilla and I have been through there a little while back, Wayne had to winch a couple of times, but I fluked it and drove it all, great little track that!

Been having no end of T.Case mount drama.

Keep ripping the Nolathane mounts in half, if they don't delaminate first

Image
Image

I tried some of the Bomb Proof mounts for a laugh, but those things are shit   They don't sit straight, you can't tighten them up properly, and they don't allow enough movement to take out any shock loading from 3rd gear standing starts

Image

I went on the hunt for something bigger and stronger and RUBBER

I'm giving these a go, they are LR engine/transmission mounts:

Image

Image

Image

They seem really good so far, strong, soft and they fit well.

As you can see theres a hell of a lot more rubber in them than standard

Image

they are slightly taller than standard

Image

The top and bottom are fractionally bigger than standard, so you have to trim a small amount off each mount with a hack saw to make it fit

Image

So I have a random selection of spares for the kit now, left to right:

Image

Standard mount remade with black (soft)Urethane, standard rubber mount, LR mount, standard mount with red (hard) Urethane

Anyways, relocated the brake fluid reserviour (remember the silicone bracket   )

Image

And some blingy in the engine bay:
Image

Image

Also "borrowed" the rear shocks out of The 50 to increase the up travel of the rear suspension
