i think its a bit advanced on the injector pump, a little water leak on cooland pipes and oil leak on the timing cover, will put that down to time from pulling the pump out and back in and a dark garage,

There is alot of diesel knock noise there, timing is likely to be out. Did you set it with a dial gauge?

You need more advance on the injector timing so that when it come on boost you have enough advance.
The advanced injector timing makes the diesel knock louder at cold idle and the engine sound "heavier" and knock more in general when the manifold pressure is low.
The rule of thumb is that if its noisy and heavy and you have good oil pressure then thats how it needs to be. That means you getting awesome detonation, the fuel is exploding with a huge "Crack".
If the motor silky smooth and quiet, you don't have enough advance on the timing
But do go and get the experts to set it up and make sure they advance it to Turbo spec's though, not just standard timing.
Fitting the Turbo can't affect the valve clearences. They are two unrelated parts of the motor.

Great thread, and thanks for sharing. I've just bought a non turbo Safari, so will be doing the same in the next few months.
Found a manifold on ebay in Hong Kong identical to the DSR so would be interested in any updates you have on how you find the set up.
Cheers,
Dave

update took it from a run to workshop down motorway to add to exhuast, pulls like a schoolboy, more noticeable power fun drive, note put all the bolts back in timing cover, again to dark garage to blame
its a bit more fumey from exhuast when running hopefuly timing will sort this

EGT and boost gauges working boost on motorway under aceleration up to 17 psi egt temp up to 300 at cruise, took the truck in to diesel shop to see if they could work on it today didn't book it in. the mech reved a few times popped the hood thinks a injector is playing up, so pull them tonight, he will test them for free

Shouldn't be too bad price wise (well, compared to a 1HDT). Down here they are $35ea to service, or $80ea if new tips needed.

Awesome, so when the first trip??
Can I add at the end of the thread that if you get a chance I reckon splice in a water temp gauge into top hose, I was getting some scary readings from the factory gauge going up long hills and sand dunes. Turns out the line on the gauge just before "H" is about 95 degrees

I tried 3 viscous fan hubs so it wasn't that
FYI, the fan hub from the factory Turbo model is WAY bigger than than the N.A hub, but you need the fan to go with it. You can pick those hubs up aftermarket for not much more than the N.A hubs. That was next on my list of things to try before it sold

I'm not sure in your area, but I have got aftermarket hubs from Parts Master before. Repco and Apco don't seem to have a listing.
More recently I have used Giant Auto Products, they specialise in water pumps and cooling system components, they rebuild water pumps and hubs in house also. They were the guys that gave me three new fan hubs to try, and then put me on to the turbo model fan hub to compare, but I never got round to getting the fan from Nissan to fit it.

Fan hubs can be split and extra silicon fluid added. Simple job, just takes longer to unbolt the fan and hub from the engine than it does to freshen it up with extra fluid.
