slow progress but progress none the less. painted the bell housing, brought a gq front drive shaft on tm, just need to find a rear one now. started pulling apart the terrano, took the drive shafts off and drained the oils and unplugged all plugs and hoses. have made a play date with tom in three weeks. so i need to put a into g a bit.

had a few minutes up my sleeve tonight so took out the front seats and carpet, and some interior trim and the big cover plate where the auto comes through. had a wee measure and the safari gear stick sit dead center of existing hole. only thing thing that might cause a problem is at first glance the new gearbox will sit quite high in the chassis and may be close to trans tunnel. by high in the the chassis i mean that the new gearbox is taller then old one and will fill up the space left by the body lift. hard to tell until i get it in.

brought a new spigot bearing and a second hand rear safari drive shaft today. removed the front torsion bar suspension, to make more room for the removal of old auto, which ill do on Friday to leave weekend free for dummy fitting new box.

spent all day on truck and got nowhere,
i could not undo the flexy plate bolts so had to go out and buy a new strong arm bar and then jam bolts and screwdrivers in to stop it spinning.i put in backing plate, flywheel ans clutch assembly and then dragged the heavy as hell gq gearbox under the terrano.not sure where the day went. lifted box up for a wee look and see. and it is going to hit the front of the trans tunnel. but only just, clears every thing else but was not completely in, so might be a wee bit premature. any way so pics
Image
in this pic the box still needs to go up 15mm and forward 150mm so the gear stick will almost touching the tunnel hole bit.
Image
and i will have to remove the front diff because the clutch slave and fork will hit it. that all for now.

Its looking good man, bit more and she'll be done. You should just chuck another 1-2" bidy lift in, that'll sort the tunnel hitting issue

got the box in today. there's good and bad news. the good news is the box is close to completion. the bad news is that i don't have any front suspension, and i did not want to sas it so soon, but that's life.
i had to cut open the tunnel a bit to get the box up high enough
Image
will have to make a tunnel extension, ya may not notice it when its all finished and back together
Image
the gear sticks are close to the dash but will heat em up and bend then to suit. ya can see here the front diff is in the way of where i have mounted the clutch slave Cly, not that it matters as it will get ripped out soon enough anyway. the clutch fork is on a odd angle so i can get clearance for pto.
Image
now this is where it all goes pear shaped. the transfer case is in the way of drivers side torsion bar. but wait there more the rear drum hand brake is in the center of the torsion bar cross member so have no front suspension.

Thanks for the comments guys
I got it going today, just needs a drive shaft made to make it Mobile. apart from the front being on the bump stops. still need to sort out reversing lights and fined out what the hell the other wires are for, maybe speedo not sure. and clean up around the tunnel where i got a bit hillbilly on it with the grinder.
about the the drive shaft i read about people adding more travel in the slip joint should i be doing that too ? for future proofing maybe ? I've never had a drive shaft pull apart on me so that's why im asking. is this mod more for rock crawling truggy with super flexy axles.?
so now need some front suspension and maybe a new diff to put it on what to get is the question. might stay with the safari theme and use staged wheels

sent the two drive shafts in the drive shop today. to make a terrano/safari hybrid. might have to change the badge on back of car to terrari or safano shortly.

If you tracked down a mq patrol axle they are couple mm wider than terrano, i was going to use one when i blew my suspension apart, then get tom to do his awesome 3 or 4 link front with coil overs then it will be unstopable :)

yea that would be awesome.
the problem that springs to mind is that the mq patrol is getting a bit older these day and parts might be harder to find then say a hilux or gq, i could be wrong tho.
as for the coil overs and links. that's phase two.
i will just sas it the easy way first, and drive it

some more progress. cross member all finished thanks to tom,
Image
still waiting on drive shaft to turn up. kinder thought it would be back by now tho they must be busy. im instilling a terrano manual pedal box this avo, and locating some hard lines to suit. will order a new clutch master cylinder and a new safari slave cylinder on Monday sick of pay out the ass at ripco need some hook ups lol. will make a new trans tunnel hump and that's pretty much gearbox complete, will reinstall interior after that. im a wee bit concerned that the rear drive shaft might be too close to the middle cross member to. will find out when drive shaft turns up.
as for sas still pondering the pros and cons of each axle to use. so needs more research before i tackle that one lol.
so next project will be some sliders, i got my crayon's out last night and made some plans up, i ordered some 80x6 flat bar and some 48mm tube with 4mm wall i think that might be ok to jack off ? the bar is for wrapping around chassy u shaped with gussets the tube will weld to that i got some pics i borrowed from the net of what i want to do.

The tube you've got for the sliders will be heaps, I recommend you simply weld them to the chassis. Mush less work than making brackets

drive shaft all finished just a small problem the shop closed for Easter before i got to pick it up :(
started taking measurements of safari chassis for suspension pick up points. still might go leaf spring at this stage as will have more scope for cheap articulation. but will throw the safari stuff under it to get it rolling at this stage.
Image
my workshop floor could do with a mo too :)
so now the removal of the independent front suspension has began.

so am i  there not a lot of method, in this madness
preparing the frame using a grinder is noise and dirty job might try and hire a plasma cutter.

mostly prepped one side of frame and have run out of cutting disks. so will throw so pics up of whats going on or what im thinking might go on :)
this pic is the terrano chassis depth about 100mm pic was taken before i finished the frame
Image
this pic is the safari chassis depth about 110mm im thinking i might be able to just cut the safari chassis so it slides over the terrano chassis
Image
this pic is of the width of safari chassis where the radius rods mount. all measurements taken under and over to make centers. eg inside chassis to outside chassis
Image
and this is about where they would sit on the terrano
Image
not what i was expecting either lol.. so the mounts for the radius rods have to go under the terrano chassis. as opposed to beside it like the safari.
this pic is the bottom spring perch on the safari diff housing and how easy it is to move the springs in to suit the top.
