Sam's Surf Build Up
Re: Sam's Surf Build Up
Nice
....now use it before you decide to redo something else. Where we going?
If you break it... build it stronger.

Re: Sam's Surf Build Up
well another update this time of an engine form. A couple of times while driving i had white smoke pouring out of the exhaust. it happened twice over a month and would not happen on start up or running. It had a few of my mates who are into cars and my mates dad and flatmate who are both diesel mechanics stumped as to what it was. It was not showing true signs of a cracked head. So out came the engine as the turbo was on its way out as well. Stripped the engine down to find a leaking head gasket into cylinders 1,2 and 3. Have sent the head off to be checked. No obvious signs of cracking which is a good sign. Bores, crank and cam all look mint which means it should be a nice straight forward rebuild apart from the turbo. The turbo is well and truly stuffed with about 4mm of up and down movement according to my flatmate as he has pulled it apart at his work while i am visiting my parents overseas. So i think it might be an upgrade time. After running a mechanical injector pump i have had to crank the boost up to get the increase in performance which is very well, but the increase in boost has caused the turbo to fail early and the head gasket to go as well i am guessing. So i am getting a TD04H turbo with a 19t compressor wheel. The turbine side is slightly bigger which will help get the exhaust out faster and the bigger compressor wheel to get more air in at a lower pressure. this in theory should mean i will need to up the fueling a bit as it might be running lean but with an intercooler etc i think it will be a different weapon. I will keep you posted when i get back about the new engine build but i am looking forward to it.
Re: Sam's Surf Build Up
Well here is an interesting question for you guys. What would have caused this?

we were driving along Blenheim road and i started to hear a strange noise coming from the back. Long story short we found this. The oil was in alright condition. All the teeth on the crown wheel were missing the tips. Haven't really done much 4wding. I do accelerate quickly off the line though.

Wish I had a buck for everytime I have heard that.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

i reckon. When I first started modifying my truck it was i will just do this and I will just do that. It is almost unrecognisable now.

Re: Sam's Surf Build Up
Thought it was time for an update. A few weekends ago a friend of mine and i had a couple too many beverages and decided that the old surf needed a bit of a tweak. So a week later i had gone and picked this up

Then it was time to pull the old one out and put the new one in.

Here is a picture of the engine mounts made with the help of Turoa my brother and my mate Sam

The next step is gearbox cross member which could be interesting as the setup i acquired has a safari transfercase on the end of it so i cant easily use the hilux double cardian to get a bit more distance off the front of the transfercase. I also have sorted myself out with some safari axles to go into it as well which will be the next big step.
Will keep this up to date as it happens. My aim is to by next weekend have the engine and gearbox mounts done and have a good idea of how the exhausts will be running and maybe have the fuel lines done. when i got the engine, it was wired to run so once i have all of the fuel system setup and some form of exhaust i will wire it in properly and start it as motivation to finish the thing off.
