and 70 series cruisers are chugging along fine at 20 to nearly 30 years old
True. But I've tried towing my 7m boat with the LS1 powered FJ40. While you didn't feel it on the back from the lights, you certainly felt it on a corner at 90k. Scarey. While towing my 30ft caravan with the 80 taking corners at 90k? I wouldn't DREAM of doing the same in a SWB FJ40 mate. You'd have to be crazy..
I rest my case. 80-100 series are the tow horse KINGS!! End of story.
unfortunatley that has nothing to do with the engine, its all about the size and wheel base. You could put an ls1 in your 80 and have the best of both worlds.. Ya know ya wana

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

Turbo's been recon'd.
It'll get a methanol injector kit thrown at it this year keeping the temp well down, well away from that drama.

Really? There are plenty of other 80's running the stock motor having no problem.
And nah, I don't wanna. I like the motor that's in it right now.

Re: petefj40 looking for a 24 valve turbo diesel 80.
Bore looking like new.

The head's a different story.
The cylinder closest to us had a gasket leak.
I took the head into a Cylinder Head specialist and all the values seemed (with a tap on a couple) to sit properly. So all the surfaces are going to get re faced, new value guides, gaskets and bolts and it should be good to go for around $700 all up. But that's just the head work.

Now it's all apart. The clutch was found in need of a recon.
There goes another 7-800 bucks.

rok has a point there.
I was looking at off the shelve ones. But why not support locally made ones I guess.
PM sent.

You must be busy.
24hr turn around sounds good, but not so good after waiting 4 weeks to get it done.

Re: petefj40 looking for a 24 valve turbo diesel 80.
Would be worth the wait.

Sweet. 4 weeks is not long to wait Pete. Way better than being told it can be done next week, and then you wait 6 weeks .............
Mind you, as you well know dude, you get what you pay for.

Very true Grant. But I don't want an engine transplant, just a couple of rock sliders. You can buy them off the shelf. No biggy. Shouldn't take a month. I'll see if I can get it done in half the time at a simular price.

Re: petefj40 looking for a 24 valve turbo diesel 80.
I don't know how he did it. But I am grateful.
Just dropped my truck off at Tom's earlier. Him and Blair are going to mount the sliders on before the end of the week. STOKED!

Re: petefj40 looking for a 24 valve turbo diesel 80.
I'm saying goodbye to the old look of the front on my 80 tomorrow.
Though I liked the look, I like the look of Tom's bar work better. (no pressure Tom)
I'm giving him some drawings of a mock up on how I'd like the new front bar work tomorrow.
The point is, to have better access to a winch (that I'll hardly use) for my daily driver 80.
He says he's never made up a front bar for an 80 before.
But I have a lot of confidence in his work.
Watch this space.
