I'll be there and I have a seat for ya Al
Last time I was there at chasm you could go in from either end however at the Clarke end you could drop into the chasm but it was not good then drive down the chasm and a deep river crossing to get out, if you go in from the snowy end it's a mission as well as the track has washed away on that bad corner at the start where the river cut in close to the track, there is a way around it through the bush but without serious bar work you'll wreck one side going in the other getting out as you can't drop into the chasm from the staircase track at the mo so gotta come out the snowy, this doesn't account for the extreme flooding that's just happened
My advice given its middle of winter and unknown quantity is have fun doing other tracks around reefton avoid the chasm till summer

Just realised I won't get leave over our school holidays as the leave allocation is booked. Family can go over visit whanau and I'll come over later/or earlier for just the trip. But you guys need to set dates asap so I can lock my leave in!!!!!
Tim, you going with Rick and Jas/e x3. Ask Rick if he'll take Rude with him please.

Just been talking to a couple of others and were going to go into the chasm closer to the time to have a nosey at the track and report back. If its its a no go then we can arrange other tracks to be done. :D
But if anyone hears any info between now and then please let us know :D
But at this stage I think tims advise is good advise and we'll look at other tracks.

The other option is to be positive and just drive through the Chasm track fixing the track as you go.

Does anyone know what the Alexander mine track is like these days? I imagine a winter trip in there could be an issue with the rivers possibly being up?

Hi Keith

The track in there never really changes much. Apart from a short rocky section in the river it is fairly easy and is probably about 3/4 hour drive each way. The river is fine unless there is rain , but if there is a good dump don't go in because one crossing gets deep real quick.

You can spend a lot of time just looking a the ruins. Some require a walk up the hill. The main structure is not the powerhouse but a boiler. The remains of the powerhouse are further up river

Cheers Richard

It's an agreed date, I'll lock that leave in when back at work on Thursday.

Good idea about Chasm, fixing as we go. I was going to mention that, but I'm not organising, just a passenger this time.

As for Alexander mine, it got considerably easier after Paul Dellis pulled out all the logs that alot of people couldn't get through/over. I have been in there enough to consider it boring now. But that's not to say a group can't go in there, I'll just talk Tim into not going. I was the first (to my knowledge) to drive the gorge in the old safari with Rick as winch bitch.

Tim: Rude's eyes lite up when I mentioned, Westcoast NZ, midwinter trip, ya coming. He said, fark the cape (he was going to cape York), I'll go with you. We'll do the Cape next winter. So I think he's keen. Probably hoping to see me freeze after two years in Oz.

Ok so we have a weekend sorted, Do people want to head to Reefton a few days earlier to fit in with shift work or stay a few days after the weekend. Coz two days aint enough time.
I will check Lake Daniels availability, but pretty sure it will only be available during the week at that time of the year.

Ill keep an eye on this, will be keen to get involved either in a new truck or just meet up for a beer. The old lady has a holiday house next to the entrance of lake daniels track so ill plan on being there for the weekend and may have options for beds or hot showers etc.

Prob take a few tools, welder, grinder etc as well. Im sure someone will smash something
