The trick used to be a shrink ring round the CV. There is something about BMC1100 CVs being adapted to fit as well

For the missing/cutting out on a bump, try bypassing the ign switch, they can corrode on the contacts

Thanks to Rex, and a bit of snooping round on the net i got Pauls email address, and some very valuable info:

[quote]

The disc brake conversion I did the hard way, I started with SJ413 front diff but the CV joints are the wrong spline! So had to have the joints cut and mated to the LJ CVs, costly and I hope I never break one!! SJ 410 front hubs and CV are suppose to fit straight on. So give it a go if you’ve got one!!

I made Custom hangers 3â€

I'll let ya know how similar they are to the SJ410 CV's in the very near future 8)

From what i have heard, they are the same as the LJ80, and the LJ80 shareds alot in common with the SJ410, so chances are......

The axle splines are different sizes but the 50, 80, 410 can interchange nuggets and c/w & pinions.
50 4.88 :1
80 4.55 :1
410 4.1 :1
A common thing in the 70s & 80s was to use BMC A60 rear diffs as they were dime a doz, had close to matching ratios and it didn't matter if you welded one up.
John Cowper used to build lockers into A60 diffs for trials guys

Looks like its going to be a tidy vehicle! :D
Oh I saw you were talking about smoking up the place!
count on it! My one leaves a trail that hangs, for the first 5-10 mins after start up at the best of times if you leave it sit for a month or two, there is no vision at all behind you!!
Rex you need one of these! we can go and find some thin tracks no one else can drive on

Hmmmm, I don't suppose the axle lengths are the same???

Dumb question. No, they're not, the axle width changed from the LJ50 through to the LJ50 series II by 100mm.

Usefull bit of info there J Top.

both my cvs are noisey but the passenger side one has stripped the nut and the only thing holding it on is the split pin, cause its not tapered roller bearings there wont be as much load.. but id still like to sort it. maybe tap a new thread on the old cv??

Progress has slowed a little after the Safari started gettin jealous and demanded urgent attention, but new shocks, water pump, thermostat housing seals, front wheeling bearings, oil seals and a bit of love to the brake calipers and diff lock should keep her quiet for a few months hopefully.

Been busy painting the LJ, its starting to look to good. Black interior and engine bay, the exterior is going to be blue.

ive a-framed mine a few times, and i wont again unless i plan on staying under 80kph , driveshafts and universals take a hammering , i think its the high ratio diffs that cause the problem

, just looking at your driveshaft, is that front or rear?

The old man used to A Frame the S1 LR every where and it stood up to it just fine provided the T.Case was in neutral.

But, i'm not convinced the LJ would. It doesn't seem like it would be well suited to being dragged kicking and screaming behind a dirty old GQ. Specially not on its good mud rubber, and then theres the damage that occurs on a trip.........

I may give it a go as i have an A Frame, but ideally, a trailer is method of choice.

The drive shaft is from the gearbox to the divorced transfercase. I have three now, but thats the only one with universals that work

Got the exterior of the body prepped for spraying. I gave it a good sand with the electric sander to get the stone chips and flaking paint off, then gave it a liberal dose of rust killer on any suspect areas followed by a heavy coat of primer filler.

The idea behind that was once i gave it a rub down with wet and dry on a sanding board, it would hopefully hide some of the uneveness in the panel work from my welds, hide the shoddy finish from the P/O's spray job and save me from speding hour with the electric sander taking it all back to the steel. Seems to have worked better than i thought, its smoooooooooth

So now its a case of masking it up and spraying on a couple of liberal coats of primer, giving it a quick scuff with wet and dry again and thenblowing it with the finish coat. 8)

Can't wait, because then its time to get the old girl to fire up

Heh heh heh heh, here we go, disk conversion coming up   !!!!!!!

jock wrote:Okay did some pulling apart today and found out some good news for you LJ20 drivers about disk brake conversions.

Firstly some facts.
Lj50 and lj20 share the same part number for the front axle shaft
Lj50 and lj20 share the same size balls on the front axle( the bit were the wheels turns on)
Lj20 has a smaller diff centre than lj50 but that is the only difference between the two.

Sj410 and sj413 share the same balls as the LJ20 and lj50.

sj410 burfeild/cv joints fit directly onto LJ20/lj50 shafts.
sj413 do NOT.

So to convert to disk brakes this is what you need.

Your LJ20 diff stripped
your front axles with the burfeild/cv removed

SJ410 burfeild/cv joint ntn part number ???? (I wrote it down but now can't find it. Will post it tommorrow  )

SJ413 front diff from the knuckle out. The free wheeling hub will fit the sj410 cv too.

Just fit the Sj410 burfeild onto the lj20 axle. Then reassemble the diff using the sj413 parts until the diff is complete. Pretty simple, no machining just a specail order from your local store to get the right burfeild/cv joint.

I have sj413 parts sitting on the bench and I checked them against evry sj410 part I pulled off the diff and they are the same apart from the burfeilds/cv.

some pics of the difference between the cv's

Standard burfeilds next to SJ413 axles and burfeilds

And the finished product. Slightly modified for strength and also using the direct steering. Will post more pics on how to do this mod too later.

If you want more details just ask what you need to know.

If I didn't spell burfield right let me know. I just call them CV's.

And:

lil_zuk wrote:Just thought I could add a little information myself. I just finished my disc brake conversion on my LJ50 and I live up here on the west coast of canada. I found that I used the following:
Diff/axlehousing- LJ
inner shafts- LJ
Barfeilds- SJ410
Inner balls and cage of Barfield- LJ
Knuckles/spindles/and all outers- sj410
I found that during the conversion I had just put the 410 barfs on the LJ shafts but as I put it together the spindle was binding up with the barf/axle. The cause was that the 410 splines inside the barf cage have a clip groove halfway down and that kept the LJ axle from goin all the way into the barfeild making it too long for the setup. So I dissasembled both the LJ and SJ barfs and I used: LJ axleshafts-LJ inner Cage and balls- and SJ barfeild. I found that once I did that the axles could still retain the expansion clip and the other thick clip on the LJ axleshaft. Thus everthing went together like it was made to fit.

So is this dude you got the info off talking about early 410 hubs (pre 1984) which were still drum brakes?? :? Got me confused as fark. As far as I can work out all you need is a disc front end from a 410 (1984 model - which we've sorted) and your done?? Theoretically you dont need any 413 bits??
When are you coming too get it anyway

Yep, thats what i understood from what he said. All i need is the SJ410 diff and its done. Think he was raving on about the 413 stuff as its more easily available in the states or some shit.

Yeah, i gotta come grab that. Maybe Saturday, see how i go, gotta get this recording thing done
