Theres nothing wrong with leaveing the Bar (chillybin) in the back of the truck so long as its full of ice and you put cans in it not stubbies.... I've done it for as long as i can remember without any problems.... other than the time the truck decided to lie on its side and the ice fell out :?

Yes bottles can be a bugger..didnt somene have export gold bottles that didnt have the caps on properly.. i remember some where only half full, some were half beer and half water and some were just empty!! I'm sure it was that the same weekend..they must have been in your chillibin.... :)

I just hope you all realise your trip is planned for a time approaching the middle of winter. If it is and has been particularly wet the damage caused to the road by even a small number of trucks will be significant. You may not know but I'll tell you for our own sakes that you may not be warmly received by the locals up there if you arrive at a time where the possibility is large that you will trash the road and i'm not talking about the 4x4 locals.

Recent(ish) events, well discussed in other threads, have tended to polarise the community in the surrounding areas to the Whanga road and all of us are tiptoeing around being careful not to rock the boat. This particular trip, since its being discussed and organised in this publicly open forum, has already been noted and quoted by persons less than thrilled with 4 wheel drivers as being undesirable for the reasons I've outlined above. We put our $10 per vehicle in for sure but by far the biggest contributor to the road maintenance in the past has been the TET trust. They have refused further funding for the past couple of years after lobbying from those persons opposed to the wilder side of 4WDing. The TET trust has just held another election and those same trustees have been re-elected so the work is there to try and change that situation.

Have your run in late July if you must and there is no one stopping - or able to stop you. But for everyone's sake please act and drive responsibly on the road on your way in there, within the town and the Whanga area, on the gravel feeder roads, on the Whanga road itself and keep the wheelspinning mud flinging action to the hard alternative route holes that are obvious in there.

I may sound like a Nana, but we have to live and wheel here well after you've all gone back to your own various districts.

Cheers and thanks, Gordon Burnside - and in this case I do write as the Mt Egmont 4WD club President.

I dont know much about Whanga Rd but I'm guessing its a legal public road like all legal public roads that all the public are entitled to use responsibly and not just the local residents?

I hope its not assumed that the paticipants of this trip are going to be irresponsible before they've even been there?

Gordon, thank you for your concern, can you please advise if your club is still doing a run in there 2 weeks before this trip???, I would have thought you would have cancelled this to not cause further potential damage given your post above?...or was this purposly ommitted?

If there was any degree of accuracy to your claim we're going on a trip there I would have mentioned it Jerry, yes. i'm unaware of any planned trip by the Mt Egmont club, and even if we were, we are likely to combine track maintenance with the run. Thanks, but if you have a problem with me, to the point where you seem to be able to find a negative in anything I ever say or post, you should raise it with me either at the CZ meetings or at the AGM. I still don't even know who you are, although I've seen a Jerry at both those events and assume its you?

That so called "shit stirring" was for a very good reason which has been proven and justified since. If you can't see the common sense I'm talking here maybe there are others who can. We fought bloody hard for that section of road and while we don't own it, as others have pointed out its a public road, we don't want to lose it, or the good relations with the locals either.

As a club we're careful to liaise with other clubs if we make a trip into their turf to find out if there's anything we need to know and that's how it works. I am advising you of the issues with the Whanga road is all and suggesting your timing is off. Take it, or leave it.

I am not an NZ4WDA rep either and I don't claim to be.

Sorry Gordon, I investigated the incident personally at the time and from what I can see you are shit stirring, now my own personal views are that this was a personal attack at Nick, and that this continues to be, the 2 land owners I have personally spoken to up there have no issues with ORE or the persons that were on this trip. yet you continue to drag CZ and the other zones into this personal attack which does not do your reputation any good. chatting to other clubs etc they have a similar view which is was reflected by the one vote you got at the recent CZ Agm.

Information I have to date is that you were planning to run a trip in there 2 weeks before us. I understand the problem with dealing with landowners, its something I have to deal with all the time, this trip is being run just before the start of the voluntary road closure

I would suggest that you work with Nick who is leading this trip rather than taking wild pot shots now and then, we are all in this together, how would you like it if we stopped you coming into an area down here?. Why have you not raised these new concerns previously when you gave us the track update?. I'm guessing if its constant rain etc the week before the trip then Nick as trip leader will postpone the whanga road bit and just do the farm play (which he has already got permission from the landowner for).

Unless you want to be proactive (and cut all this BS out) and suggest another suitable track up there and maybe even join us on the trip and actually meet us?, I'm sure we would offer you the same courtesey if/when you come down here.

I would go down this same path by advising whoever was organising a trip into a sensitive area of local conditions and concerns and I'm sure they would not take it personally - they haven't in the past at least.

Nick and I don't have a personal thing, in private correspondence between us Nick obviously thought I'd get more than one vote for the position of National president.

Our club has made a clear decision not to be involved with this person at any level at any time but don't "shoot" the messenger ORE forum readers? You'd have to "shoot" all 80 of us because there are at least 80 members of the two clubs in Taranaki who do not want a bar of him and a few on here, perhaps less informed, who think that's unreasonable. Have a think about that. Go on your trip if you must, make sure you pay your $10 a truck so we can at least try to make sure the road is still there for the next time you want to do it.. I've said enough on this subject for any intelligent life form to be able to make their own decision and I will say no more.
