A lucky save today. In veiw of my North Is trip in Oct I decided to do some maintenance today.

Motor now done 83Ks so thought it was time for a new timing belt.
Found the tensioner has just about siezed from shit and water.

The Alternator has nearly siezed as well for the 4th time

A broken fan blade

A dry supercharger idler

So wont be having a day off tomorrow

Another mod coming up. This morning found my Crankshaft pulley is cracked.

This is the second one so will get a sleeve made up to strenghten the new one and hopefully stop it happening again.

Hi Richard, what is causing your front pulley to crack ????, is it because you are driving the supercharger off it ??.
On looking back through your build thread I noticed your top of diff wrap/tramp bar is fixed at both ends, how do you allow for the spring shackle movement ????, have i missed something or is this a cunning plan ????,

COULD WE PUT A TAIL ON IT :?: ,

If you look at the rear setup it has leaf springs with a tramp rod, front setup is trailing arms without a tramp  rod

Yeah Kev, I see the set up, on the rear diff from where the bracket that holds the coil spring on top of the diff is the diff mounting end of the tramp rod this is rubber bushed and the front of the tramp rod mounting is also rubber bushed with no allowance for the ark that the diff moves in when the rear shackles move back and forwards. For some time I have been watching Richards Hilux when he drops the clutch to tackle an obstacle, the Hilux squats in the back and gets good drive to the rear wheels, unlike most other vehicles that seem to jump at the back. Richards Hilux handles the starts the same as the speedway stock cars do, they have them set up so they drop their arses and get all the drive forward. I have been trying to work out how Richard achieves this , the stock car boys get there go forward by adjustments to the pinion angle, usually downwards, this in turn is transferred into pulling the back of the car down when the pinion tries to climb due to the rotation of the drive shaft and the resistance of the tyres. I am not sure how Richard achieves this but it works.

Not sure how you measure this in leaf sprung rigs Kevin, but it is easy to reproduce with linked suspensions. It all comes back to what your antisquat numbers are in relation to instant roll centre.
If Richards rigs has between 0 and 75% AS with a forward sloping IRC, it will behave the way you have stated.

Hi Fitzy
Yes the Supercharger is causing the Cracking when I turn it on at up to 3000rpms.
I am having a sleeve made today to strenghten the pulley. That is not the answer though.

The main problem is that the supercharger is shock loading the bracket mounts and the Pulley and causing the cracks.

I have decided to spring load the tensioner to absorb some of the shock and I think that will solve the problem.

Cheers Richard

PS . I will answer your other Question later. Spent all last night at intensive care and a bit tired a the moment.

Hi Richard, I hope everything is OK re- your intensive care visit, what ever it is our thoughts are with you and Janet.
B & C series Cummins diesels have a very good sprung loaded belt tensioner, they are for a serpentine type belt but this could be modified for your v belt set up, pop down to your truck/marine workshop I'm sure they will have one to show you. They can be got in either up or down tension. Forget about the serpentine belt bit as it runs on the back of the belt and won't make any difference.

Got the new modified pulley back today so should be alot stronger

Image

I will check out one of those Cummins adjusters Fitzy. Thanks for the info. I have already started to modify the old one and because I am running a trip this weekend for the Nelson Club might have to use a make shift setup to go on with.

Jafa's idea of a full time supercharger deserves LOLs because a diesel runs miles too cold with it turned on. Around 150C instead of a good 450C

Hi Fitzy
It is probably too complicated for you to Understand. Actually there is no rocket science to what I have done. Just luck.

What I did was fit an anti tramp rod the same lenght as the spring from the front shackle to the centre of the diff running the same plane higher up and forward of it. The rear end has a solid rubber bush and the front end has adjustable rubber bushes the same as the rear end of Safari radius rods which allow rotation.
The front of the rear hilux springs are shorter and nearly level and dont move forward and back that much as they go through their arch. My rear drive shaft only moves about 15mm

When I set up the anti tramp rod, I wind it tight on the adjusting bushes which pulls the top of the diff forward.

I have a couple of things opposite other people.

1 Nearly all my wheel travel is up .
2 I have not cut the rear end off because that is what stuffs Hiluxs.

I put all my weight at the rear of the deck. A 100kilos over the rear axle is 100kilos.A 100kilos mid ship is only 50kilos over the rear axle and 50kilos over front.

100kilos a metre behind the rear axle is miles more than a 100kilos because like a see saw it lightens the front because of lever action and gives good traction to the rear wheels and make the rear suspension work better.

So what I am saying is it a combination of a few things that makes the back sit down.

A bit more progress today on my spring tensioner for the supercharger belt to stop the shock loading on the crankshaft pully.

All I need to do now is make a screw adjuster for the spring and hopefully the spring will be strong enough.

Hi Wayne
I wouldn't say not much to do, but getting there and only 3 weeks to go.

Still haven't got the rear diff with new locker set up yet and then there is the alternator.

More progress today on the tensioner and the spring seems to have the right pressure. Just need to work on the hinge bearing now.

Got the supercharger spring loaded tensioner finished today.

Works well and takes the shock loading off the crankshaft really well.

Also got the Alternator going again

Next weekend I will pull rear diff apart ready for the rebuild and new locker.

Only 18 days until we head to the North Is again for our stay with Mudzilla and Waikato tracks

Very good service from Randys diffs in the US and UPS

Rang up yesterday morning for a V6 ring and pinion and customs rang at 4pm today to say it had just passed through Auckland so I should have it for the weekend.
