Emergency Numbers

I reckon it would be a good idea to have a list of emergency numbers available for those times when things go bad and members on trips may not return on time as expected for whatever reason such as breakdowns, severly stuck or whatever.
That way loved ones, mum's and dad's or brothers, sisters or flatmates know who they can call on to get more information and possibly send out a search party should the need arrise.
This list would need to be divided into several regions of course and should be in a printable format and be easily found on this website.
Tripleaders need to let those people on the emergency list know where they intend to go and expected time of return.
It would give nice peace of mind to know that should something happen while you are out there and you are unable to get back in time that somebody will come out looking for you.

Its called the recovery squads. It existed on the old site. Not viewable to standard members to keep it semi secure from people shopping around for 4wds to steal etc. Should be back on the new site sometime.

it seems like a good idea, apart from the fact that all our personal details would be public.
if its the wife and family that you are thinking of, then just supply them with a list of close mates and club members they could ring if you are late.
my wife knows not too worry unless its well after dark, as she knows that things can go wrong, but she also knows that I went wheeling with a whole bunch of other people who will still be with me(hopefully), so rather than just one lost or stuck, there will be a whole group dealing with the problem.
Most clubs have a club list you can get hold of, and if there are not people highlighted on it to ring, then you just simply do it yourself.
having a nationwide list would be ineffective to a welly member if he got a call to go rescue a Chch member. He would be able to go and would probably not know the area the other party was lost in.
Make your own emergency contact list for your whaanau to keep them happy and all should be well.
If anyone wants to use my number, then send me a PM.
I'm sure there are others who will offer to put thier name on a local list.

The recent Wellington search for the Polish fellow was hampered by a two + day delay (missing Saturday - notification on Tuesday) before police notified and further delayed not knowing exactly where he went. Belmont regional park and Rimutaka forrest park were both areas of interest and are large places that have previously proven to be difficult to search due to the terrain. I saw a map at the Thursday debrief that showed the Rimutaka forrest park search areas covered (gps tracks) by at times 12 search teams, three helicopters and a few 4x4's.
Without knowing a start point the park would take several months and hundreds of searchers to cover with any chance of finding a missing person.

Does anyone remember a website where an emergency request could be left?
It was along the lines of details of the trip and expected time out with a delay set to trigger a call for help response if not stopped.
The call for help was by email to any number of people - (more the better) giving details of the planned trip.
Those people could then contact local police who then pass on to SAR acurate information and start searching.

Cant say I've ever come accross that site?
The best means is to notify your immediate family/people you live with/friends that will be the first ones to notice your absence and a little bit of detail as to your intended trip, start place end place, route and expected time of return etc.
There were delays before they could start looking for the Polish bloke coz they didnt know where he had gone when he was reported missing after he was already 3 days overdue. There was a lot of background work and hence the rapid media campaign to get any info from anyone in the public that may have seen him. Its really hard to start a search for someone when you dont know where they went?

Yes I was aware of the background to the missing Polish fellows case.

Mt Matthews and back in a day, over the Whakanui Track
phew, even when I was young and fit and tramped in the orongorongos every weekend, I would never have tried that, or maybe I would of
end of coast rd, round the coast and up to Mt Mathews saddle and down to Baines Hut was bad enough, especially when you take the wrong turn and end up bush crashing your way to the bottom of the forest park and still walk to Baines, 14 hours that day.
let someone know where you are and if you are a solo person, then set up a phone buddy, where you have to ring someone at a certain time and if you don't then they send out the cavalry

Yeah I reckon that having a few emergency contacts in your area would be a good thing begining with family first and close mates in your neighborhood
Something must have happened to ya to be thinking bout this
