hi all thee of great knowledge, I have a 70 series with a factory PTO, and when it is use it makes a loud clicking noise, is there something wrong or do these things have some sort of ratcheting brake in them, I had one on a Pajero (yes I have upgraded) and it did not make any noise. if it is a fault would i be right to presume it is more than likely a drive shaft knuckle locking? and is it likely to fail under load? thanks for your help in advance, Stephen

It's quite likely the sleeve with the shear pin where the PTO D/S attaches to the winch. Mine has quita a lot of play, and rattles a bit. But also worth checking for play in the universals, and make sure the D/S mounting brackets haven't come loose.

Does the winch run smoothly, as in when you are winching is it one long smooth pull, or does it step a bit? It could be a worn uni, or the shear pin is catching/vibrating, worst case, a damaged tooth on the drive, but not really likely.

pto still winches smooth, and runs well I am just nervous of using it in case it fails under full on load, like when I'm really stuck (which i like to do to myself on a regular basis)

The shear pin is the engineered weak link & will break before you can damage the winch. It sounds as if the vibration is in the PTO drive-line. I'd suggest you check the U-joints, spline at the transfer case, driveshaft mountings, and the shear-pin attachment on the winch end. There's probably bit of play there somewhere. Meantime, keep using it, but avoid winching in 3rd or 4th gear so you keep the driveshaft RPM reasonably low.

Cool, have done, I am running an M5 8.8 bolt, tried cap bolts, and even though they have a higher tensile strength, they seem to break before a 8.8 bolt, and a good mate who is an engineers seems to think 8.8 may have a higher shear strength. I have managed to get them long enough so there is no threaded part being under load. I hope they will work.
