4age Wiring Help...

Trying to get a 4age (redtop) going in my project SJ413, purchased the vehicle with it already fitted...
It won't start and there appears to be no spark. I have tried holding the lead straight from the coil over a earth and there is no spark there also so i am guessing the coil is not working correctly (or not receiving the impulse)... Does anyone know how to test the various stages of this to try and isolate the problem?

Also is this the correct coil for a 4age?
And the Plug in the picture with the little Orange O-Ring was on the coil but just doesn't seem to clip in firmly like i would have thought... is there a way of testing that this is contacting correctly?

Lastly i have a litle stray wire at the front of the engine like i am holding in my hand and a closeup of the plug is blowing up in the photo... anyone knows where this is suppost to go? and if its important :)

Well rigged something up to test the coil in another vehicle and it seems to be going ok... plug on it seems ok...
There is 12v going to the coil and also a -'ve going to the coil which is all fine...

Does anyone know how to start testing the ignitor and ecu?

Cheers

Easiest way to check the igniter is to swap in a known good one, same with the ECU. Check all the connections & earths too, & there will be a few fuses & relays in the system to check.

That stray plug looks like it's for your oil pressure sender.

Have you tried to find a manual for it. I did a bit of searching around the net and found a full 800+ page workshop manuel for the ca18 I have.

The 4age is a popular motor for he boy racers so I would bet money ther will a full manual avalible. Might have to search by car rather than engine. They have wiring diagrams, vault levels, fault codes and fault tests, every thing a Factory mechanic needs and more.

Could be worth a try if no one else can shed any light.

Thanks for the replies... can't seem to find too much online about testing them :( (and not sure what car it was out of...)
Don't suppose anyone can recommend someone in Orewa/North Shore/Auckland that knows about them (and not too expensive)

Cheers

give tim a text, he has a mate logan who is a mechanic, i remember he put a 4age into his corolla a few years back, and he worked on nicks valiant (not that that has anything to do with 4age's), he is not a mechanic anymore, but might want to earn some extra cash

I know you have a red top but doubt there would be a lot of difference in the dasic wiring and fault finding. THe link below should take you to the full factory manual. Have a look if you cant find anybody else who can shed any light. The section on the engine or electrical system will have the diagrams and fault finding sheets you need.

Good luck :D :P
