THE BIG CHOP PART 7

Post by Rangerat »

Quick story today and one that will amuse Bodge.

The weekend just gone resulted in the Rangie growing 2" with a body lift.

Here's the kicker for Bodge, it took 2 hours from start to finish, not counting the bull bar mods (still under action)

I made my own spacers (alloy)and box section steel for the body supports.

The only other change was I had to make up a bracket for the starter to body to chassis earth strap.
Centre diff lock still conected, Hi/Low still long enough for the knob to fit.

Last job is the brake lines. I'll get longer ones made.

Sweet - all that worrying for nothing

I can believe it took someone competent 2 hours...

After all I run on an hours to days/incompetence to competence ratio...

Yes I am incompetent - but I never tried to hide it - aye Shipley?

Yep went well
I would say I was just lucky with no siezed bolts etc..
Thanks for all the advice as it was good to start with a plan instead of going in blind.

(I did manage to snap the fan shroud in half) which did "p" me off as I've had it out 3 or 4 times before with no trouble. I'll guess I'll just have to fit electric fans now, oh dear how sad (ha ha)

Then you could add a switch to turn it off and on when crossing water, not so much water would get sprayed around the engine bay then. Don't they recommend that you take your fan belt off when doing water crossings :?: I always left it on as I'm certain it was the only thing that got me across

On the electric fan front - I have twin 12" fans and still have over heating probs.

The mechanical fan has its advantages - the biggest one is that they pull far more air which not only cools the radiator but evacuates air from under the bonnet - electrics just can't do this...

I think that is where the real problem lies - under bonnet temps rather than radiator temp. If it gets too hot under there then its a viscous circle whereby you start to suck in progressively hotter air into the engine which means less oxygen which leads to leaner running which of course makes you run hotter - before you know it youre in the red....

A lot of people go for electric fans and they do have some real advantages [like switching] but they also inevitably end up trying to cool the engine bay some other way - vents etc.

I am not against electric but you do have to go into it with your eyes open...

Definitely use a cowl on the radiator and look at creating some negative pressure under your bonnet to help the hot air get out...

PS. Who the hell ever had time to get out and loosen their fan belt - yes I have heard it and it makes sense - but I have never seen anyone bother... Its almost less hassle and more fun to stall it and get towed out :D
