First thing to do (like before you fitted that computer) is to fit an EGT gauge.
Then if you're serious you also fit an exhaust manifold pressure gauge.

bigger free flow exaust helps a lot too ie 3" , Have been shown a mod where the back of the turbo is honed out as well icedjohno knows about this, my 2Lte is running 7 - 7.5 psi, can be pushed up to 12psi apparantly, but that won't happen until the new 3" exaust goes on

need to keep these motors cool as well, they do apparantly suffer the ol head cracking problem, fit a secondary temp guage to it as well...

Consider disconnecting the EGR on it as well, you gain a tiny bit of HP there as well

egt guage is a must.

then big high flow exhaust including dump pipe. apparantly they are quite restrictive just after the turbo.
cooling mods will be a must, they are know to overheat rather easily and the temp guages are typical toyota "goes to the red after it blows"

then better intercooling and then fuel :)

You want an EGT gauge in celcius that reads from around 200 deg C to around 900 deg C. Some petrol ones start and finish higher, these aren't as suitable.
750 deg C is the point where your pistons (and maybe turbo) will start to melt. Don't run above this for more than a few seconds.
200 deg C is a safe shutdown temp.

Basically more fuel increases EGT's, more boost (and better intercooling) reduces EGT's. It's a complicated juggling act getting the best performance and if you get it wrong you'll be rebuilding or replacing the engine.
Not trying to scare you, just letting you know upfront.

sounds like fuel cut off might have kicked it.

i'm suprised no increase in performance wit hthe 3" exhaust (boost shouldn't increase). even just changing the main muffler helps a lot.
are you tested seat of the pants style or actually timing or vechile speed ?

also when winding boost up that inlet air hoses are tight, some tend to leak when under high boost.

1kz's have great power as they are but a lot of its low down power you need to remember the weight of your truck and that its never going to be a race car,
Why do you want so much more power? are you running massive tyres? lots of heavy towing? or want it to be fast on road?
I can only assume your 1kz goes as well as mine did (mine was stock) and I'm not sure what your trying to get out of it, i would be concentrating on keeping the temp down, keeping it reliable and be happy with what you have. Or you could look at throwing in a 1uz or something..

I agree. Mine goes bloody awesome for a stock standard rig. If you want more grunt, why didn't you buy a V6 unit? They are heaps cheaper as well :P
Still, I do enjoy watching this thread and seeing what you can pull out of it. That way, when the day comes for SAS in mine and the old 36" swampers on, I can look back here and see what you did  :D

its a deisel, if you want to zomm up hills and pass cars then buy a petrol.
even with your mods your proberly have around the 100kw mark in basicly 2 ton vechile with the aerodymaics of a brick.
basicly the power of a hatchback but 4 times the weight.

concidering your comment on exaust making no difference i would go give a standard one a test drive. if the standard one runs the same or better (actuall km/h up hills etc not "feals better") then you may have a problem with yours.

My 95 Surf with a 1KZ-TE on stock 31's would go up hills at 110 in 5th if I wanted :!: . At 70-80ks I still had loads of power to spare for passing etc. All I do is give it a rev up just before putting the foot down to spool up the turbo boost. Im getting about 11-12psi of boost with no mods.

I have a friend who has fitted a manual injector pump, cyroed the head and pistons(twice), custom inter-cooler and headers, LPG injection, wound up turbo boost, dyno tuned ,thousands spent ,he is getting 150kw.
Would probably be easier and cheaper to just do a engine swap.
