How long do your 413/samurai wheel bearings last?

Post by HedgeBoar »

I have a samurai with 31" x 10.5"s on the usual yhi white spokes..... Replaced the rear wheel bearings a couple of thousand kms ago, and have just removed axles to replace diff to find that one of them is quite stuffed, and the other has noticably more play than new already. Grease still looks fine in both.
It has had a fair bit of off road use in this time, but nothing too serious and i don't thrash it too much....

So how long do the bearings usually last with larger tires?

Have a vitara so can't help you there but...
What offset are the rims? as pushing the load away from the bearings places a lot more wear on the bearings rather than just the increase in height...
I take the the bearings were all torqued up to specs last time...

Another option could be the axles/housing? are bent and putting odd wear on them...

Cheers

i run 31s with the largerst offset i can, the bearing last well, until the gaskets on the flange ripped and the sealer
that replaced it gave out. other wise good for at least 5000kms off road.
lots of river crossing down south :D

I used to go through a few. Check your axles & housings for straightness. Mine was a bit easier on bearings after I had the axles straightened at the local driveshaft shop.

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.
