More power from a 3B

Okay, these 3B things have been around for a while, how can ya get more power from them, without a huge expense, and hurting reliability. I don't wanna have to turbo'supercharge it either, not making things easier here am I? .
I know I am looking at a transplant in the future, but in the mean time, are there any cost effective ways to get more out of the 'ol lump? Basically looking for cheap power from what I have!! :D
Thanks,
Shane

Install an EGT gauge and crank the fuel up. You're not going to get much out of it without a turbo though, you might even find the EGT is reaching scary levels on the factory fuel setting.

I guess the first question is: Can you afford to blow it up?

If not, it's best left stock.

To be honest other than a turbo or an engine re-power for your truck I think what you've got is about all you'll ever get :?

The 3b's a low reving torquey oil burner and thats all it'll ever be

Funnily enough there have been very few occasions where more power would have helped, but more rev's........ :? :?
But we all percieve we need more power, and I guess the correct question I should have asked, rather than about the 4.500 V8 was what oil burner should I look to replace the 3B with, and I wanna stick with Toyota too.

15BT sounds like the one to have.
Similar package to your 3B, but bigger displacement, direct injection and turbo'd.

Even a 1KZ would be nice, but the 15Bt would be better and probably easier to fit.

15BT? :? I've heard of a 13BT, but not a 15BT. I had considered one of those, and when the time comes I think that is what I will look for, but do they perform down low like the 3B, or does it need to be on the turbo?
Cheers,
Shane

I haven't seen a 15BT either, but they're fitted to the MEGACRUISER among other things. I've driven Dyna's with the 14B (non turbo, direct injection 4.2 litres I think) and was quite impressed. Very quiet and smooth, much quieter and smoother than my Isuzu 4BD1T.
But yes it needed a turbo.

i've sourced a 4 litre turbo diesel engine to repower a 40 with.. could be an option if ya find one for the right price?

still, cant go past the 3b for 'all day every day' performer. not a rocket ship, but thats the sacrifice ya make for reliabilty.

Is the problem power or traction? my little wee Cruiser Jr is not a huge powerhouse but a rear difflock has made it so much better, finding that don't need to rev its nuts off to get places (usually).

What about a cheap EFI or something?

Saddam will have a spare 302 very soon

I wanna stick with an oilburner, so the 302 is out. I built a 351 out of a 302 once, the 351 is far better than a 302, and cheaper to run too. I'm talking the Cleveland here, not Windsor. :D
Yup, traction has been part of the problem, especially on Papa, which is the prevalent surface here, but revs/power will/should clear tyres better. EDIT: I have front and rear difflocks, and 33" Maxxis Buckshot Mudders, that were only 1/4 worn. I have a new set of Maxxis BigHorns that I will be trying in a week or two.
But, as I said earlier, the 'ol 3B has never let me down, I am just wondering what options I have, and wheter they really would be any better.
Cheers,
Shane

If you aren't worried about sticking with Toyota, then an Isuzu 4BD1T would make that fly.

Mine is pushing around 500Nm just with more fuel and boost. Spins all four on gravel up to 80km/h

Done a little bit of looking into a 14BT and 15BT, depending on power and rev figures it looks like a good option. :D Going by the other forums, it looks like they will fit the 'cruiser, and one forum mentiond it was the perfect swap for a 'cruiser 8) ....so watch this space, maybe I can find one at a good price......the only downside seems to be the rotary fuel pump, but maybe I could get someone to adapt a mechanical one....or are the rotary type ok?
Thanks all,
Shane

Some rotary pumps are all mechanical, some are electronic control.
I don't see a problem with an electronically controlled pump, user adjustable tuning boxes are available for them.

Looked up the ols posts, he did some research, but not enough to give me the answers I wanted... :?
But I found a place in NZ, Blairs, so I am trying to see what they can tell me about the 14BT, they don't list the 15BT, as yet :?
I will see what I find out, and post my findings here.
Cheers,
Shane

Just heard from Blair's in Auckland, a 13BT motor, complete, $3250 +gst & freight, I guess that is not too bad for a complete motor, with a warranty and has been run on a test bench. It definately works out cheaper than a recon job.
I have asked about a 14BT, as soon as I hear back, I will post that too.
Has any one dealt with them? Any feedback?
Cheers,
Shane

They have no 14BT's but they have a 15BT, $5950 +gst & freight.
Thanks to all who have posted, I will proboably go for one of these three options when the time comes 8)
I appreciate all of the many replies, and I hope to meet up with the various people on this forum.
