PTO issue?

PTO issue?

My BJ74 cruiser came with a factory PTO winch. No worries up until the other day it started dripping oil, and i hadnt even used the winch that recently. Looks like its comming from where the shaft connects up the houseing so im guessing its the seal gone or something? What is involved in replaceing the seal and where would you buy it? (there arnt many models that have the pto so the seals might be quite hard to find)

Well, I tend to believe it is probably the same PTO that has been used for quite some time by Toyota on a number of vehicles :D , so the seal should be easy to get. First try Toyota, as you will get the correct seal straight away. If you have anther vehicle to drive, you can take the old seal out and try an engineering supply shop, or your nearest hydraulic workshop, as both will have access to a wide range of seals.
To get at the seal, first drain the oil out of the pto, then you will need to drop the winch drive shaft, and undo the centre retaining nut and remove the flange. Then you can remove the bearing retainer housing, and the seal should be in there.
That is how my workshop manual shows it any way.
I must admit I have not done this seal, so it may be possible to remove the seal without taking off the bearing retainer. 8)
Of course, you could try operating the winch, to see if the seal has dried out, and is just weeping, it sometimes happens :wink:
