Hilux Surf tyre size 33 or 35?

Post by Quicky »

I have a ln60 solid axle surf with a 2.4 diesel which needs a tyre upgrade. I am currently running 31inch mud tyres, My suspension is already lifted about 4 inches and im planning on a 2 or 3 inch body lift. I have a locked rear diff and am looking for an lsd for the front.

Will my 2.4 have enough balls to spin 35's on 10 inch rims or should I stick to 33's on 8 inch rims until i get some more horse power.

cheers

the 2.4 will turn them but youll struggle for power, even 33's will sap a fair bit out of her, but if your looking at a repower in th near future go the 35's

hmmm, follow matts advice im sure he has been there done that, i guess the question to ask is whats ya truck for? is it pretty much 4wd only? do you do much travelling or towing etc in it? Lets face it, we no it will be slow but it might be worth it and as matt said you can always look at a repower later, last thing you want to do is buy 33's and then want 35's in 6 months.
My 2c is go for the 35's but then my truck is not my every day driver and the likes of a supra conversion is getting pretty cheap (and popular)

a few other things to consider, drive line wear and tear (cv's) cost, and if you can fit them, usually ya need to move your front axle froward etc

im was running 2.4 turbo and it struggled for power on 33s will spin em ok but when needed a bit more didnt have it
now i have a non turbo 2.8 on 33s much better can use 2nd gear attacking bogs and hills but still run out of power ...........
if ya not going to upgrade to more power soon go 33s gives you more clearance and the engine will handle it......

Will the few mods you can do to the 2LT power the 33's a bit better or is it just pissing into the wind?

I'm talking exhaust, intercooler, more boost, right tune etc etc
