Hi guys.
I have a 1988 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR with a 2.4 turbo deisel with about 170 on the clock. Recently the front pully off the crank shaft and the crank shaft itself had a disagreement and parted company. The front pully is cracked and needs replacing and the crank shaft itself has lost a little of itself which can be repaired.

I also have a guy who offered to sell me a non turbo 2.8 deisel engine. the car it was in was set on fire how ever the engine wasnt really affected. Just the plactic timing cover at the front of the engine, but i wouldreplace the timing belt underneath it just in case.

My question is what engine do you guys think is the best? I know the 2.4td was very low in power, and seemed not to be a very good engine (oil leaks, blowing black smoke under load - i think the injectors need a clean) ect... though im not too worried about huge amounts of power, i really want a reliable engine. what is the reputation of the 2.8?

I was thinking of buying a 2.4 turb a few years ago untill a friend warned me off,he said go for 2.8 or 3.0.Glad I did not get it now as I have seen many 2.4s that have lunched themselves.Plenty of 2.4 parts on trade me though,spose thats something.Thats all I know sorry,im no expert.

hey thanks for the input. Seems your mate was right, mine died at 170ish kms. Buy talking to some local wreckers and people it seems the 2.8 is going to be the best way. Though it could turn expensive doing the conversion, finger crossed.

Just completed converting from a 2.4 td to 2.8 non turbo. No serious problems, had to swap sumps over, but everything bolted up sweet. The main difference appears to be in the head. If you get stuck on anything ask away.[/quote]

To the best of my knowledge the 2.8 is a fairly straightforward "drop-in"
In addition to this I am told you are able to refit the manifolds off the 2.4 to the 2.8 so that it is a 2.8TD !!

Yeah the 2.4 turbos go straight on the 2.8 and make a big difference.Well worth doing something you'll never regret.The NZ new 2.8's are supposed to be stronger then Jap import models but I don't what the difference is.

Has anyone who has done his got a rough price guide.My 2lte has done nearly 250k and is ok but is slightly low on power for what i need. Is there any thing major that needs to be done if this swap is done, also i take it that this would need certifying

As the 2.8 looks almost identical to the 2.4 then I would doubt that anyone would notice that it has been repowered.
In additio to this, seeing as these wagons had a 2.8 from factory (4Runner) then it should be no major drama to certify and should not cause insurance worries.

any one here got a 2.8 with a turbo bolted on ?

himmmmmmmmmm ok my 2 cents worth as i have done this swap ...............yes the 2.8 /3L will drop straight in ..........BUT THE COOLING FAN IS IN A DIFFERENT POSITION ( from memory it's abit higher than the 2.4 engine ) next \ as some 2.8 engines have different glow plugs ...so you will want to check that out as you may have to fit a different glow plug timer................................ next some 2.8 ' s have different intake manifold's so this has to be taken in to account aswell ....... and there are different exhaust manifold's ...... series 1 and series 2 engines and as there are different exhaust manifold's there are different turbos ( are you lost yet it's not all bad ) ............next some 2.8 engines have different engine mounts and i think the 2.4 engines dont fit ..........THIS IS ONLY WHAT I REMEMBER AT A GUESS AS I DID THIS SWAP 6 YEARS A GO dont forget the wiring that has to be changed aswell as you will find out if you go ahead with this swap ...... IF it was me do what i did fit a bog standard 2.8 /3L engine .ditch the the exhaust manifold and fit a set of flows ( magoo mufflers sell them ) K&N air filter and tickle the injector pump and you will be surprised thay go pretty hard .............................................. THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION AS I AM A DIESEL MECHANIC AND PREFER TO GO THE DIESEL WAY ( DAMN TOYOTA AND THAT F##KING 6M-GE ENGINE IT WILL BE THE DEATH OF ME ........

nice one pinky... so what about if you have a standard 2.8 hilux,& you want to put a turbo on it, is it easier & cheaper to use the 2.4 turbo or is it better to just go to a turbo specailist or diesel specailist like yourself & get a aftermarket kit put on ( like some that ive seen advertised in aussie) with the price tag to boot.
