Death Rattle??

Post by Ryan »

ok, i took the zuk out for a play on saturday and the oil light came on? We thought it was probably the sensor as it was still running nice with no rattles and oil levels etc were all good. But today when moving it out of the garage it developed
a rattle and it seems to move from the top then to the bottom of the motor???
any ideas on wher and what to look at etc to find out what the problem is or if it is terminal?? :(

Cheers Ryan

Drian the oil through a rag and check for shinny bits . Also look at the sump plug , see if there is much on it .
Then go from there .

I should have a spare chev engine coming up pretty soon ....... :!: 8) 8)

Is it a knocking sound or a rattle? It would be worth sticking an oil pressure gauge on it to see if the oil pressure is down and the problem is terminal :?

its a rattle up top but only at about 1500 rpms(it comes and goes) and it had a bit of a "nunga nunga" in the bottom end...

I would say the two noise death rattle is thus. You have run the big end bearings giving the bottom end noise, this will allow the extra length in the conrod stroke for the top of the piston to hit on the head, hence the top end noise. All in all,

BUGGER, OR A BIT STRONGER,

THE SAME NOISE AS THE SEAGULL MADE WHEN IT FLEW INTO THE BRICK WALL,----FUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKKK, ,

Thats a bit of a bugger man , what about pullin the sump and head off to have a look and see just whats wrong , you may be able to just get some new rings and big end bearings then at least you know that it won't do it again and i sure someone in welly would be able to help you if your not sure how to put all the new stuff in.

All those pieces of metal have probably gone through all the bearings and stuff so its probably terminal unless you want to get it rebuilt :x

Another second hand engine would probably be a lot cheaper than a rebuild

This hole engine swap has been a nightmare for you :(

I go with the run bearing and head slap . Pull the head and see if/how much damage there is . If the head is ok , look for a 1.6 block and a cheap source of these is from suzuki swifts the early 90's sedan had a 1.6 16v carb'ed engine . Pull it out and put all you rwd stuff on it , head , sump and engine mounts etc . These engines can usually be had for much less than the vitara ones and you have all the rwd stuff now . They turn up at pick a part a fair bit here .

If you put new bearings in the current motor you will want to check teh oil pump is ok .

Tony has a parts vitara sitting in his yard (8v) that has done a head gasket so its in bits but the rest seems to be ok......PM Shell  Would be easy to put your head and flywheel etc on the motor as its an auto......probably doesn't want much for it

another update..... getting a g16b out of cultas complete with loom etc.....and complete head and injection plus loom and ecu from a g16a vitara..... will be hopefully putting the top half from the vitara onto the g16b from the cultas....
that shud solve the top rad hose and dizzy problems from the east/west cultas motor :D

if anyone has done similar can ya let me know any problems or easy fixes??

Ryan , what caused the Death Rattle ?. With your application have you got oil pick up problems, does it require a front or rear sump or more baffles, or was the motor on it's last legs. I always like to know why so any problems can be remedied, you don't want to go through it again.

YOU NEED THE BIG TICK,

dont know why? dont know if motor was on last legs either? but was talking to a guy who races production cars today and they had problems when they started racing at taupo....to many heavy G corners and had a couple of cars lose pickup etc
so he showed me how to do a good baffle in the sump. so i will give that ago as i dont wont to be chainging a third engine!!

ok new plan? if it can be done?
this is the g16b....
Image
notice it has no dissy....and the top rad hose is at the wrong end(left of picture)
im thinking of just putting the dissy and replacing the top hose setup for the one on this......
Image
and just swaping injection unit and electrics from second picture(g16a) to the first picture(g16b)
that way i dont have to piss round with the cam and head etc....

comon all you zuk people has this been done??

I would say you are going to have to stuff around with the cam either way as the dissy drive from a fwd to a rwd is different I belive . Pull the rocker covers and have a look .

took everything to a mechanic today to swap cam, dizzy and injection from the vitara head to the cultas engine....
and all the water inlets and outlets are being changed aswell.....also new cam belt, water pump, tensioner and front seals...and a redesign of the oil pick up and sump...new clutch....and hes gona sort electrics and ecu,
not sure how long it will be? but cant wait to get the motor in already.....
but still hafta sort fuel surge tank, fuel pumps, fuel lines, oil pressure gauge and BIG light, and a push button start....
