Drive to Ernies......date set, Easter Friday 21st

Post by 85BJ73 »

Looking at an informal trip into Ernies farm over the long Easter weekend, any one interested? We don't want too many, and it is just a recce and a say gidday to Ernie trip. :D
Let me know,
Shane

To be honset, I have not come up with a day, I am flexible, but the trip is weather dependant. :?
I might as well list requirements now.
Good mud tyres, at least one strop, front and rear recovery points on truck, fire extinguiser, first aid kit, what ever you wish to eat and drink, bog roll, basic tool kit, spade and a small food gift for Ernie. This is a basic recce type trip, I do not envisage any winching or tough stuff, bush marks are possible, as I am unsure which tracks we may go down yet. :)
The reason the trip is weather dependant is due to the surface, as in it is papa, a very greasy surface for those who don't know.
Please, if you know your truck has a mechanical problem, don't come. I have had a clown turn up with a "minor" (his words after it broke down) mechanical issue, 3 hours of mucking around, we left the truck there.

For those who don't know, Ernie's is a farm north of Wanganui, around the Waverley area. Loads of tracks, free to drive, except for a small food gift. Very scenic, loads of history, plus you get to meet someone who has not left his farm in a number of years, around 40 I'm told, except maybe one or two visits to a doctor. We also drive past the historic house where Rewi Alley lived.
Weather dependant, due to the ground surface. not a bad trip to re-aquint yourself with your truck, or to get an insight into trips above shiney's.
Good mud tyres are essential, I don't wanna be towing people all day.
Cheers,
Shane

I wish I knew how.....
If ya follow the map down from New Plymouth to Waverley, then head inland up the Kohi road, (we will go in the Breaburn Road) to the Moeawatea valley (I think that is how it is spelt)
Helluva long way from Auckland.....but you are more than welcome.
Cheers,
Shane

As Shane said, just north of Waverly turn into Kohi Road, turn into Okahutiria Road, keep following that road it gets renamed to Mataimoana Road after a while, then left into Ahoroa Road, which may actually be named Moeawatea Valley road now, which is pretty much the road into the Moeawatea Valley, some pics here,

I will trust the directions listed above, I know how to get there, but not the names!! :?
We usually go in from this end (Wanganui end that is) of Waverley, up the Braemore Road, as it is more 4x4 earlier than following the kohi + other roads. I dunno what the road is called that takes you up the Moe valley, so I will trust DAK there, all I remeber is the letter boxes in the bank, and the name of the valley there too 8)

Yup, for those coming up from the south, we could arrange a meeting point in Wangavegas and travel up together. 8)

For anyone from the Wanganui or south of Wanganui area wanting to come, meet at the Double S BP, just north of Wanganui at, say 8-8.15 Friday morning. The BP is on a sweeping r/h bend about 5-600mtrs from the 100 k signs as you head toward Waverley.
For those from the north of Wanganui, 9 ish at Waverley 4 square.
