Buying a MIG

Post by doddzee »

Im looking at buying myself a mig as my dad will shortly be repossesing his. Currently using a Unimig 200 which has servered its puropse for what i do and are looking at buying somenthing similar. Does anyone ahve any reccomendations or things to look for when purchasing one?

I have found these 3 on the net which look like they will be about right for what im doing. I assume the higher duty cycle the better.

The highr the duty cycle the better, is about right, but bear in mind what you weld the most of, as in light or heavy, and get the most appropriate mig. It can be difficult to wind a heavier mig down to do panel steel, but at the other end, a light mig will struggle with heavier steel. But, most of us probably only weld up to 8mm, with the occasional 10mm plate, and most migs will handle that. Just make sure it can run both gas and gasless wire. You will get a better weld with gas, and the best with argosheild.
Cheers,
Shane
No matter the problem, the answer is always give it more gas.......

hi think we have one of the list or two but one has a sepperate wire feed unit, the single phase changed to weld ail, both run well in the shop no faults in the year we had them, on a note have a 400 amp mig fick two power controls one wire feed panel steel to 16mm plate no problem

I'm running the Liquid arc 210 and have been for almost 7yrs... a very reliable welder that can handle some very hard work, I've welded 25mm with this, worked it beyound the duty cycle  and poked god knows how much wire through this thing... now for the bad, ignore what they tell you about all the settings, in reality you will only use it in the top settings (power switch to 2) it just does not like welding at low amp even with .6 wire, you can weld pannel but you'll have to modify your techneque  I've given up swopping wire when I do pannel and just dial down the amp and feed and spot weld beads with .9 wire, it arcs better  but on anything heayer 8) she's all good, seems to have good capacitors (less splatter) well better than some, watch out for the cheap welders they can be bad for this, the only mechanical problems I've had with it are, the plastic "euro fitting" on the machine isn't very strong don't drop anything on it, and the drive chassi melted on me when the power wire got loose (from replacing the plastic euro fitting  )
On a side note the 255 is sposed to have alot better adjustability and be better for pannel  but thats only what I've heard I've never had the chance to try one out

tryed out a Cigweld 255, very grunty unit nice and tuneable, but I found it to be loud and splatter :? these are sposed to have real good capacitor banks :|
