Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has converted Surf rear brakes to discs that was done using inexpensive parts to keep the cost down, if so what did you use as the donor vehicle to keep the hand brake on the wheels. Did you have to do much modification of the parts and did you get it certified.

IT CAN AND HAS BEEN DONE it would be best if you talk to suprasurf or maybe supralux ?? as i know suprasurf has done this . i think he used subaru brake cailpers as thay have the hand brake control . do a search . you might get lucky

Last time I checked SupraSurf (Mike) had late 80's/early90's Galant calipers on. This is the most common caliper used in conjunction with solid rotors from the front of a Hilux ute. They have the mechanical handbrake lever on them, although I have yet to see one actually hooked up to the handbrake cable. Mine is still drums so I haven't played with it yet, but the MU will need disk rear so I'll be doing it soon.

The rotors slip over the studs once you remove the brake drum and braking components, then cut down the backing plate a little to fit it. If you do the vented rotor swap in the front then you have a convenient pair of these available.

The caliper is fitted to an adaptor plate made from 10mm steel which bolts to the 4 flange studs that hold the hub to the axle housing.

The alternative I have seen on one truck is to use Subaru front calipers and that did actually have a proper working handbrake so thats probably the way I will go - also these calipers are a dime a dozen with hundreds of old subs around.

When I get around to it I'll post as I go with the details, but unfortunately Conans truck had a small accident with my 9" grinder and the IFS kinda... well... it just fell off, whole lot... ask him...

No, he went home to leave *ME* to work on it alone Managed to hitch a ride with a friend late Tuesday night which is why you never saw him I guess...

The mid-bowl sump Supra motor doesn't fit in an IFS truck, just in case anyone was wondering... not even close. The simple option would have been to swap back to the front bowl one... but hey, why take the easy option... Conan has some photos... I made him do all the grinding

Just finishing the front crossmember then the axle will be under it and he'll be off... piece of wee's... I think he's coming up next Friday for the weekend to help any finishing off that needs done, like fitting the engine, wiring etc...

sweet dude so you not getting much sleep at the mo then . just to let you know how im going the surf is 99% all done just having problems with the engine running rich but hope to get it sorted today got some some time of due to broken rib 's . do you have any pics of the rear spring hangers and mounts as mine dont work that well ( falcon springs) in the rear

I would imagine early 80's (EA82 engined 4WD utes, wagons etc)

Measure the width of the original disk rotors against the Hilux ones to make sure they are going to be in the same ballpark.

Take another look from the top Looks like a Holden outkast to me!!
Yeh Paj rear are handbrake shoe, 93 onward and drum pre 91.
Still, good to see them getting some time on the forum!

No. If you use a L149G calliper the handbrake is in the calliper. Then twin cables to a Corolla centre mounted lever or if you have the SSR Hilux it will already have the centre console with the lever.

Whats an L149G caliper and what models did they come out on... and for that matter what sort of price do they go for? Galant ones are cheap and Subaru ones... damn, you can buy whole running cars for $100...

Sorry, not whats an L149G caliper - I meant what width... what size disc will they fit?

I haven't tried it myself yet but I believe the Pajero disc slips straight on the Hilux axle once you get rid of all the drum brake crap.

late 80's/early90's Galant calipers on.

I have a set on the bench ready for this conversion. From the PBR brake ID book the following Mits have the same brake pads and therefore MAY have the same brake callipher, with the external hand brake. The rotor diamentions are very close to Surf soild front disc. 10mm thick verse Surf 12mm.( or is that the other way round, but whatever, its close)

These are a good start but check everything as Mits have a habit of changing parts around on the same model.
