Hi there,
I have been reading many post to try and find out whats up with my 1990 Teranno 27TD auto other than it having 270.000 on the clock.
Since I got it a few months ago it has been producing more and more black smoke under load, with a very thick burst of smoke just before the turbo kicks in around 2000rpm. Once when pulling off fast (foot to the floor) it produced a black smoke screen leaving the car behind hidden.

The injectors need done I'm sure, it runs rough when cold. But it also has oil between the turbo and manifold and had a load of carbon like crap in the manifold that had a go at scraping out.
One diesel & turbo place in New Lynn told me I should get the manifold fully cleaned out and the injectors done, another in the area side the turbo is on the way out and will blow up sooner or later!

I did notice the oil level is high if that could in any way effect it?
Any advice would be great

block off EGR and EGR butterfly (in the intake) if it has them.

oil in the intake is not good and often acts as extra fuel. some of that can come from overfilling crankcase with oil.
best thing would be to fit a catch can. if you still get a lot of oil in the intake after using a catch can then you may have a turbo seal leaking.

black crap in manifold really does need cleaning out. pull the manifold off and clean it out. you can loose a fair bit of airflow due to that crap which of course means over fueling and black smoke.

also check the simple things....clean air filter. fit a NEW one. its amazing how many garages refit dirty air filters.
also check any intake hoses for leaks and if any plastic tubes are collapse on itself.

I made sure the air filter and pipes leading to the turbo are all good. Hope I don't have to splash out $$$ on a turbo
Might look around for a cheap Hilux if the Terrano is going to cost too much!

The garrett T2/T25 turbos on those are the cheapest turbos in the whole world to rebuild. A rebuild kit off Ebay will cost you about $80 on your doorstep.

That said, dying turbos produce blue smoke rather than black.
First things to check are always the cheap things like the air intake system (clogged air filter etc)

with 270 km on the clock it may sound like the injector needs a service?

do you know the service history of the vehicle,in particular the njnector pump
timming could be out,over fuelling,and im told there is a fuel filter in the injector pump aswell.so it may pay to check that out aswell.

another thing could be,is alot of blow by happening.have you noticed a loss of power?

what about the fuel filter?

just some ideas to have a think about,by no means am i a mechanic or anything haha.good luck.

You could look at putting a catch can on the breather as a part fix. this will catch oil that is being forced out of the engine via the breather due to blow back

I have been looking out for a catch can. I did fit a DIY one but think it was far to small the be effective. I had the injectors done now at $550! but hasn't helped at all... it's still pumping out thick dark smoke just before it boosts

Have fitted another DIY oil catch can at the same time as changing oil+filter to test if this may help the smoke problem. I'm sure this will be found upon... I used a 4L plastic oil container and simply cut holes to push both ends of the breather pipe in, this has greatly reduced the smoke.

repco do the proper unit. It has some steel guaze init to help take the oil out of the air being breathed, air with oil comes in hits guaze and then seperates so oil falls into can and the air carrys on. A mate fitted one to his crusier that used to smoke real bad and now it is a vast improvement.
i always get a bit dubious about plastic containers in engine bays holding things like that
