easter weekend 08

well im gonna start it off early as im going away for the weekend and wont be back till monday

heading up to stony bay (top of coromandel,ish) to do some camping and fishing etc.

i had lots of plans for the g this long weekend but they have all gone out the window
springs won't be ready till next wednesday
and the engine parts i ordered haven't arrived yet
so looks like i might have to go up thommos
i guess i can make a start and pull the old motor and trans out

Today:

Got my new axle seal and bearing put in today.
Got the WoF as well.
Got them to do a full drain, flush and recharge of the brake system (new fluid). Just as a safety precaution as it was 7 years old now and might have absorbed some mositure over the years.
Nearly finished with installing a switch in the cab for the compressor under the hood.

Tomorrow plan on doing:

Finish wiring the switch.
Engine oil change.
Install new deeper transmission pan with new filter and trans oil.
Regrease everything I can get my hands on.

i pulled my rattling engine out today and took wireing diagrams to the mechanic whos doing the new motor....
new motor already 90% done!!!
glad i didnt give it a go myself.......

Finally got the brush screen and front bar finished on the Paj



and finished the back bumper as well mainly to protect the vulnerable part of the fuel tank, the seam. Also the 2 inch thick walled tube strengthens the chassis during those hard core snatches.



Also fitted new tie rod end, bottom wishbone balljoint, inner CV, front brake pads and Aisin freewheeling Hubs.

All in all, all ready for Tommos this weekend! Bring it on!!

well i got my cert on thursday arvo ready to go to rallywoods and then after only one piddly hill decent (psycho) and an attempt at a little hill climb i blew my cv to smitherines and that was the end of my wheelin

was on call for the long weekend so havent done much.the bighorn crapped out last weekend, just wouldnt start and traced the problem to the crank sencer so finally got round to pulling the crank off and replacing that.was dam good to hear it start once again

Our landlord bashed on the door early Friday morning and asked if we could do him a big favour, he wanted to mow some of the back paddocks but the high winds of late had bought down tons of debris and limbs, most too big to safetly run over, so we saddled up the 4bies and headed up to tha back blocks of the farm and strarted cutting, winching and dragging gum and totora limbs here there and everywhere, generally having a ball and spending a lot of time driving narly little hazzards and whatnot.

as you can see the back of the farm is quite flat and really not too much of a challange to drag the 2 foot limbs around.

and yes the left front wheel IS chocked ... no way im risking my kids with just the handbrake on that much of an angle

Changed Brake pads in front.Discovered wheel bearings shagged.. Discovered brake rotors too thin ..Replaced it all good thing ive got a mate who works a parts place..The mark up on some stuff is unreal..Got wof just need to adjust hbrake.. Sweet ready for my river run now .. 2 weeks to go ..Should be awsome.. Got a thread on planing a trip have a look and come along ..

had a good bush trip with some mates, managed to put scudo on its side again, 10 hrs of thrashing the jeep and then when driving it home from mates in the morning the cambelt broke ,lucky not a interference motor ,belt had done 3230ks since i did it which for me is about 3.5 yrs, so not to bad ,new belts and im ready to go again,

Took Jeep up Akatarawas and along Odlins Road to check if the new Crankshaft Position Sensor had fixed the problems I had over Christmas. An uneventful trip all the way into the tank traps, so it all looks good. Now I can get back out on some trips again.

Had a productive weekend.
Fixed all the rust in the Zuk , installed new Cam belt , adjusted tappets, timed and tuned engine and finished painting up the interior ready for hippo liner and a WOF .

Was very happy until I was driving home from my mates place and dropped a cylinder.(and gained a knock)
Checked coil , leads , plugs all ok.
Know have to drain the oil and check for metal , drop the sump and possibly take the head off. Looks like it is going to be a re-build

picked up the (new to me) landrover - had some hairy moments going over the 'takas, friday played rugby and got smashed, saturday and sunday chopped firewood - I am so over it now. monday - welded up one side of the trailer, do the rest of it tonight hopefully and then start looking for some plywood for the deck.
I feel like I need another 4 days off to recover, and do all the things that I ran out of time to do

Went for a play up the Maungatapu, found one of the front hubs wasn't engaging so stripped it down and lubed it up temporarily.

On the way home had a nasty vibration that got worse and worse, I think its a UJ going out. Rear diff also seems to have a stuffed bearing, So: no more 4WDing until those get sorted out.

Went down to Whirinaki for a full on weekend of bush 4 wheeling with members of the Manukau, Taranaki, Auckland and Rodney clubs. Managed to get the new truck finished enough to take it out and it ran really well am quite happy. Bull bar #1 was not up too the task though so will have to build a new one. side bars worked a treat (just need to finish the bits that go over front and rear gaurds) and once I did some adjustments and found low gear it charged up the hills with the new 35" tyres. Found a couple of old tracks that have not been used in years deep into the place and other than that the usual tracks (hydro rd etc) are in quite good condition due to the lack of rain but would say to you guys to start using them more as the are beging to get over grown. was nice to get through new tracks and get a good look in some nice weather, it is a totally different place in the wet. Sorry you could not make it down Coxy you missed out on some nice trails. heaps better than last year.

Went up the Leatham valley for the weekend with several mates, spent three days 4wding and motorbike riding, the kids had a blast. Now have two quads and a dirt bike needing repairs.

Went to the west Coast with some mates and had a blast, but did suffer from a few new injuries to the bighorn Did the alternator in a mud hole on the Densten track on the first day so then spent a few hours pulling it out and fixing it that night at reefton. Lost the speedo on the second day which put the auto in to safe mode so no overdrive. had a go at fixing the speedo problem yesterday and no joy so its booked in to have that looked at and the auto serviced. Blocked the radiator solid with mud so that came out and has been soaking and getting washed out which was lucky because when I went to undo the bottom hose I noticed a very large bulge in the hose so have got another one being sent up today.
At the end of it all though it was well worth it saw some new country. Kept up with the Cruisers and the Jeep expect were the rutts got just a bit too deep for my 31's and had a heap of fun

We drove this area on Saturday; Nevis Rd, Duffers Saddle, Old Woman Range, Old Man Range to the Olelisk and then down to Symes Rd at Fruitlands. We got to around 1745m altitude.
Unfortunatley the weather was not that good as there was a heavy fog until after lunch so the views were not the best.
Sunday we drove up Mt Burke getting to about 1450 meters altitude. The sights were unbelievable.

This is my first time in this area and I for one will definatley be back.

Magic part of the country, was neer there myself over easter, did the nevis road and carricktown track on moterbikes and 4wds. best part was it had rained the night before...

Yep - its accurate (2098m)



Had a couple in a glider come for a look (centre left of picture). They make an amazing sound when so close. They went back and forward a couple of times for photo opportunities - not sure who was more surprised to see each other up so high.
