Just spent 3 days over easter fishing for trout in the Kaingaroa Forest. The main river is the Rangitaiki, it goes for miles North to South. The river is very low and the fish are abundant. Size caught 10cm - 45cm. Other people I met caught up to 55cm. Browns and Rainbow are in the river.
You need a forest permit (get in Vagas free, but must show them your trout licence). Forestry security run 7 days a week 24hrs a day. There is one legal camp site on the river.
Well worth a fish.
