NZQA 4WD Safety Course - Canterbury NOW 3rd,4th May

Post by mike »

Hi All,

Trying to gauge if there would be interest in a 2 day 4wd course for the weekend of the 26th and 27th of April. This is a NZQA accredited course with one day of theory followed by an exam and then a couple of hours on a specialist made 4wd course, followed by a full day of 4wding with river work. Cost is Free or $25 if your not on the NZQA system.

A little more info can be found here on the Rotorua NZQA Saftey Course registration form:

Its an course well worth doing for those of you that are thinking of doing it, I came away from the one we did up here learning quite a few new things that I never knew..... and shit that theory stuff was a lot harder than I thought it would be even with an open book test

Have added a poll to gauge interest.

Its normally two full days depending on experience. 9am start with theory and exam finishing with special 4wd course, next day is 9-10am start depending on peoples plans the night before with river work and technical driving till late in the afternoon (usually 4pm start winding down).

I would be interested in this course dependent on the answers to the following questions.

What are the vehicle requirements for the driving portions of the course?

I have a new Ssangyong Actyon Sports Double Cab 4WD manual (http://www.ssangyong.co.nz/sportsdualcab.html) that I'm still running it (this morning it has 1100 km on the odometer). It is standard, no rated rescue hooks or other mods, standard rims and tyres.

Will the pratical sections be suitable for this vehicle?

Thanks

If its anything like the one I did for search and rescue (same units I think) it was great learnt heaps that I hadn't really thought about before

For some of the one I did we spent time driving the police Rodeos to get a feel for them, they are factory standard and a lot of the other wagons there were very factory some even shiny

They give us a troopy with factory diff locks and full roll cage etc up here in Wgtn for SAR but because of OSH and health and safety requirements etc they arent allowed to modify it or take it many places. They arent even allowed to swap the skinny 750x16 tyres for anything more practical coz National headquarters decided it has to retain all its OEM fittings

I looked into advanced courses as I did this one on the coast years ago. To do recovery courses you have to go through "tow truck school". And the cost was thousnads of dollars. You have to do the full recovery course to recover vehicles for a fee.

Back on ore under another guise Al?, guess you couldnt keep away

Actually I think the place I do the training for might be running the recovery courses, with a little bit of pushing from me and a trainer down south they might be a real possibility in the canterbury/otago region.

Welcome back Al
Hard to keep a hard man good, ohh good man down, um is that hard man up!
Pleased to see you on the board.

As discussed with you a while back Mike, I am very keen to get NZQA recovery standards signed off. If we were to be able to do this. I think there would be a lot of interest.

Nah, I looged on years ago as pathfinder67, I just forgot about it. When I found ORE again I looged in as Albundy. Would have used Albundy but it has been locked out of this and the club site :?: :?: :?:

Now this would be cool. Mind you I have done some serious recovery of late. Trip at xmas we were winching safaris down vertical slopes :D
