Soft Sand.....

Ok Shiny alert!!

,
Whats the best method of tackling soft sand, bar driving it like it was your ex-wives...
What sort of tyre pressure is best to run?
I have heard that nearly bald basically flat tyres are great for the soft sand, but in the V8 I found the traction to be not that fantasic with the balding tyres.
In the Rugger I actually found the new ATXs good and the new Durangos even better.
Any help would be appreciated....

You right on the money there.
Traction is not the issue in sand, its the digging holes and berrying your self with you chunky tyres and whatchin the tide come in over you preciouse wagon that is the issue
Grunty tyres are great on sand for traction as you said. No doubt.
But with road or bald tyres, you won't berry your self. You will find you can actually climd sand dunes better with the smooth tyres, as you can wheel spin the whole way up with out digging holes and coming to a stop.
As soon as you spin in that situation with grunty mud tyres, you dig a hole, and your screwed.

Thanks for that DeiselBoy...
What sort of tyres are best for sand and rocks then?,its basically a coastal environment....is there a sand specific tread pattern or is it a case of MUD or ALL TERRAIN...?
The Durangos werent the most expensive but seemed to sleuce the sand out and away from the truck, somewhat similar to the effect that rain tyres have on water.
And I guess the wider the better for floatation?? I was told that 33s would fit on my Surf...??
slow

man im slow today, missing all the Q&A...
what deisel said

... big feet with no diggers

let down to about 15-20lbs all terrains are great for the average sand/town/hard dirt 4x4'ing

but if your gonna be going mud as well the AT's will ... for sand you want floatation to stay on top and not dig in.

The NANGKANGs appear to be re-badged YOKOHAMA tyres..
YOKOHAMA tyres are usually what I bought in Japan, they are awesome.
I cant find any pics of that though or a Nangkang website...
Both the Kumho and Pirrelli look pretty tame to be honest...

Hmm

Simon does Perreli scorpions fof a good price, my bro just picked them up last night.
Very impressive.
Albundy runs them to.
Maybe thats what you really need,a just a set of general purpose mud tyres.
The pic here is not upto date, they have redesigned them alot and shit they look good. Must get a photo of them in real life on the prado.
$189 each for 31 X 10.5 R15.

Yeah they look great, very similar pattern to the Durangos...I found/felt that having the tread almost down onto the sidewalls helped the Rugger plough through angled sand slopes.
Heres a classic example of the terrain in question....(and yet another Isuzu stuck..

)

I'll grab a pic tonight, but if you look through the west coast pics on Albundy's Terran you will see the tyres i'm talking about.

Where was that photo taken?
Best way i know to thru sand is to get stuck, coz you learn real fast from then.
Best way I learnt was watching a guy pass me (while I had all four wheels in the air) back and forwards back and forwards. Once I got out I tried it and hello it worked great. Better than all the other advice I received.
Oh yeah, about 20psi but I have been told you can go as low as 10psi before the tyres start falling off the rims, I never wanted to risk it that low

How does this sound?
A set of MAXXIS MUDZILLAs for $1280.00....(33x13.5x15)
Or a set of GT Saveros for $940.00...(33/12.5x15)
Sounds good...??

Those saveros go really well, My mate's got them (33x12.5xr15) on his safari, and tthey hold the road wet or dry really good, do the jod off road well too, only thing wrong with them is there is no tread on the side walls. Don't buy those buckshot tires as anyone down here will tell you the rocks rip them to bits, and they are pretty crap in the mud too. I run good year wranglers, full m/t pattern, but they dig very well so are no good for the sand, unless you can find a worn set.
Hey wopass, could you please get a price for the wranglers, 32x11.5xr15 delivered to Invercargill?? I paid $350 each for mine, and i can get them fitted and balanced for nothing. Thanks very much.

My truck has GY Wranglers on at the moment and are pretty knackered and even worn I found that they dug into the sand....still got out no bother but I could see problems with them when I really pushed my luck.
From what I gather the closer you get to a street spec tyre the better the sand performance is.......BUT regardless of the tread pattern the bigger wider the tyre is the more surface area the tyre takes up on the surface of the sand the better the "Flotation" on the sand is.
I saw a guy in a shiny as late model Surf with no modifications at all bar a set of huge MAXXIS tyres, and he was crawling down the beach on ultra soft sand.....

Hehehe, the wranglers dig like mad, it can be bad sometimes, but i think i'll be deffenately buying another set. You are totally right, the wider the tire and less grip you got the better, so its a compromise , do you just get AT's and deflate to about 15psi, or you could get a set of bead lockers and deflate to 6psi

the AT's can be under rated sometimes, they go pretty good and if you wanted to tackle some serious mud you could just put on a set of chains.

can do mate, will do some ringing on monday for ya. $350 each seems pretty steep

but wont know till i price them. let you know mate
those saveros at $940 is pretty reasnable, ive never run them or know anyone who has so no idea what sort of life you get out of them, i imagine for the price its worth considering.

Thanks wopass, that was the best price i could find around town, so it never hurts to ask, thanks very much.
The saveros are a pretty good tire, especially if you have got the power to clear the tread as they have no side lugs. They handle realy well, and my mates ones seemed to last for ages, didn't get ripped by rocks etc, and he thrashed the shit out of them, he had bfg's for a while but he recons they are crap compared to the savero's, and at that price, how could you complain??

;-P
