Better breathing for a GQ

Post by Muzza »

Hi Guys
I have a 92 SWB 4.2 non turbo diesel Safari
I will probably turbo at some stage but at this stage will put a 3" exhaust on and try to improve the intake breathing.
Is the factory filter and canister good enough or replace with a K&N or foam filter. Has anyone made up a custom snorkel for them as I have seen some usefull intercooler bends and flex pipe at Super Cheap. Any recommedations of mufflers to use on a 3" exhaust or other basic performance modifications ?
Cheers

I run a normal filter down at the motor but run a oil soaked pre-filter up at the snorkel top hat. I also took out the resonator box near the side wall to produce better flow, just used some flex tube from supercheap. I am also looking at replacing the exhaust with 3" but bring the end out behind the passenger door. I am pretty sure that rick at 4wd accessories has made some custom snorkels for safaris.

GQ airfilters are only optimal when new and will starve the engine after a while, I have a 50mm body lift and have replaced the factory filter with a home made/nother brand filter system that is twice as big as the nissan ones and so far it seems to have a slighet improvemnet in fuel economy and power

Theres another place down by garden city ball, think its called falsgrave automotive? Just the tube all bent up then you have to weld the craves on and paint it but if you know people with the know how or can weld its not to pricey. Think it was $140 for just the tube.

Thanks Guys.
I think I will make up a custom snorkel with one bend which goes straight through the fender wall in front of the A pillar and modify the intake pipe on the aircleaner canister. It looks pretty easy and straight forward to go through there. I can't see any point taking it all the way to the front then back again to the airbox as it is now or would be with an aftermarket plastic one. My canister is a oval shape but K&N and BMC ( don't know about UniFilter ) only have them for the flat cartridge type so I will either change the canister or wait till I turbo it as this would require the canister being shifted or changed anyway. I think you can buy just the top intake hat which would probably be a good idea as I think it does alot of the diversion of any ingested water.
Cheers
