Super charged Diesel

Has anyone ever considered supercharging a diesel?
the idea struck me instead of turbing my 5l toymota, why not stick a supercharger on it
Your thoughts?

A guy from CCVC, Ron Wodham?, I think was his name, used to have a LWB Safari that he bought brand new. He had it fitted with a supercharger pretty much from day one I think, it used to go bloody well. Unfortunatly it was written off. Dodzee on here bought the wreck I think, come to think of it, Dodzee, where did that engine go?

Sold it to a guy who was going to use it in safari for the puropse of launching his boat at foxton beach. Think the vehicle was to remain up there so that was its sole purpose, seems like a waste to me. It took up a hell of alot of room in the engine bay.
It did go bloody well, looking back it probly would have been a good idea to keep it. It was a sprintex supercharger out of oz. Go for it DBW!

If you want something different, then go for the supercharger.
But turbos give much better economy and more power too.

if my turbo s@#t itself i would s charge it..I like the idea of boost from idle but they do lose breath higher in the rev range..Check out sprintex they have bolt on kits ..Just sit down when you get a price

A variable vane turbo will give you boost from the lowest rpm you can use it. But due to engine/gearbox vibration it's usually not that pleasant trying to put down lots of torque in the few hundred rpm just above idle.

cheers for the input guys, am thinking of using a Toyota SC14, as fitted to 2.5 import estimas.
figure it would be easier to set up than a turbo, with it being more linear in boost vs revs would be easier to tune the injection pump, as well as not having the huge heatbuild up associated with the turbo.
Dodzee, do you have any info on what had been done the SC diesel you had, year and engine type, electronic injection or mech, HP and torque figures?

No i dont, google sprintex superchargers. Im sure they have a web site.

there was a few good posts on this on outerlimits.
they had good power down low but tended to loose out on the top end and also drank more gas. making the brakets and getting it to fit is a bit of a pain too.
turbo is generally easier and you either gain economy or get more power for the same amount of fuel used. however it lacks that nice low down power the SC gives and the SC has no lag or wating to get the motor loaded up enough for turbo to make boost.
if your really keen why not both ??

Or a variable vane turbo, just use a pressure actuator.

tho sizing can be a pain. they don't always work well with a simple wastegate type actuator. boost is a critcal factor, but you also have to watch backpressure and turbo rpm. ie it can create a large amount of backpressure and spin the turbo too fast trying to produce boost at low rpm.
a programmable controller is a lot better but certainly costs a lot more.

with the toymota I would say go supercharge or both super charged and turbo. I love toyotas but would have to admit down low there is just nothing there once the turbo is fully wound up there is no stopping it but when you are trying to get out of a tricky situation you need low down grunt and can be hard to get revs up enough to get it. There was a cruiser on Trademe fo a while with a SC on a 3B and aparently ran well, from memory it was from a supra or something like that. if you search expired aucions you should be able to find it. may still be available. it was mounted where the aircon pump goes.

Cheers for the input guys but this, if it happens, is gonna be a budget build.
basicly, fabricate brackets for the supercharger, arrange a belt layout , plumb it up and wind up the fuel pump and hope it doesn't lunch my engine
as a side thought, anyone got a 2l-t pump lying around?

I supercharged a 5L toyota a few years ago . it is off a 2 litre toyota. Im running a 210 pulley on the drive shaft giving 8 pounds of boost. At idle I have 4 pounds which is a real advantage over turbos. In the winch challenge last year at Reefton not a single vehicle could get up petrol hill. I can do it any time I like and have never failed because with the supercharger you have complete to control to shut off , gain traction and accelerate when ever you want. A turbo drops out of its band and then will not accelerate Quickly again on a steep hill.
