Does it blow any smoke when it happens, if so what colour. Does it happen when its hot or cold or all the time. Have you just filled up with fuel ?. Dose it use any water. May seem like simple and or dumb questions but they can all help to solve the problem. Alot of problems can be solved with these simple questions. Also make sure your front pully isnt lose, came across that problem last week made a strange rattle and seemed gutlles.

Usualy found on the inlet manifold, the best way to fix it is to block it of. Replace the gasket with a plate of panel steel and dont put the hole in the middle, and block off the vacume hose. Makes it run better and stops the soot build up in the inlet manifold.

check the butterfly on the inlet pipes. if it operates while motor is going (with bit of throttle) then you will need to disable it.
