Any one know how to get to the speedo and detach it...for a 94 prado??

depends where you want to undo it, easiest would be to unscrew it and pull it out from the transmission, It's the cable at the back on the passenger side. Only problem is you'll get crap in the hole.... other option would be to pull it out the back of the speedo, but that means taking the dash apart...

Yea that sounds about right...wish it was eletric.. may need to rig up a bike speedo instead haha.

dont know if cruiser is the same as hilux but with hilux you can undo the cable and actually pull the insert gently out and do up external nut thus stopping any crap getting into the gearbox. And yes it does go back in and work when need be.Used to do this all the time as i used truck on farm and road so would disconect when driving round the farm a lot

other way is to mark on your rev counter the 100kph mark, and the 50kph mark before you undo the speedo, then you know your speed in relation to your rev counter instead of speedo!

Or you could get a gps, then you can track your speed, distance traveled, etc, and know exactly where you are, then you would only need to hook the speedo up for a warrant

Am deffinately thinking about it for myself, just need to find a cap for the gearbox. And put on 1000km's or so between warrants so i don't get busted

just unscrew from gearbox, pull centre out, store in garage and refit screw thingy on gearbox no dust mud can get in now

cant stuff up anything, dash end is just sqaured off round cable,gearbox is short round sleeve with tity part, only go in one way

I thought MU's had an electronic sensor for the speedo? Mine is. If you have a manual gearbox then you can unplug it (autos use speed sensing for part of the gearchange so if you take it off they play up aparently).

The later model ones have the electronic speed, about 96 onwards, mines only a 92. And thanks fubar, i didn't realize you could just pull the inner out like that

electric speedos are easy to ummmmm fix
remove speedo head (dash)
remove speedo from cluster
locate the stepper motor for the numbers, smalll cut on circut board solder 2 wires to cut feed to motor solder to a hidin switch
temp refit dash, test drive, needle will still work but ks dont click over

wonts not legal?? if for a WOF the big book says that the speedo has to show K's per hour not distance travelled. Cant fail you for a WOF whats the problem. And if you read the WOF requirements very carefully there is plenty of little loop holes.

THAT loophole works for petrol vehicles, the odometer is not important... but distance travelled is VERY important in a diesel since its tied up with how our man Helen gets her new presidential limo...

you have just found the other loop hole there is nothing to seperate diesel (non COF required vehicals) from petrol in reguard to speedo having to record distance traveled. Ask your local MTA branch but dont ask a testing station as they are revue collectors even thu they are owned by MTA. And Helen is too busy head down in the back seat. I knew a girl that was into that .... but Helen ohhh no thanks.

If the distance recorder does not work (for whatever reason) how would you track the oil changes, filter changes and most importantly cam belt changes ?

Not sure I would trust the GPS to keep track of 10,000 or 100,000 ks at a time ?

Interested in the answer as i would not be troubled if I could add the trip meter to the list of broken bits on the old girl

An hour meter in the engine bay, roughly every 100 hrs for a service for light diesels based on my calculations if you drove the whole 5000k's at around 90 - 100k's.

Problem is i can't find an hour meter any where. May have to try a heavy industrial store like maybe a tractor/farm/ATV shop.

Just a small word of warning - this is a public forum. There are a couple of threads running here which could be taken very much the wrong way by anyone in authority who may be reading. Hell, our man Helen could be a secret member of this list and no-one would know.

There is another 4WD forum widely used, full of twats which is why I no longer belong (and now I've made such a bold public statement I'm not telling you which one it is ) where a certain 'vocal' chch 4WDer made some remarks he probably wishes he hadn't about a certain automotive business who, through another twat on the board, found out about it and dragged him through the courts. Not quite the same, but it shows how things can get rather stupid if you're not careful.

hour meter/moto minder from any decent bike shop that has motocross stuff .. bout $100 - $150 for a decent one i think...

Most outboard motors have an hour meter fitted - try a marine shop, or even an outboard wreckers.

most jap import trucks with aux stuff on rear run aux hour meter

On my 94 surf I blew up the gear box. At that time the speedo was working except for the trip meter ... just stopped one day. But when I got the newish gear box put in it was all going again ... any idea what was wrong (right)?
