i had a great weekend trip up thompsons flat it was the shake down fot the new toy , BUT the shake down turned into the break down..
made it through the weekends antics untill the trip home ..
1 x altinator = dead
1 x radiator = dead
1 x 3y = lots of not so good sound affects ...

but i did get my new super swampers out for a playand had a bloody good weekend..

the prob now is what do i do now ???
fix the 3y , find something new ,
if do a change do i stay petrol or go diesel..

since i spent all my pennys on the new toy it has to be cheap and although im keeen to give anything a go i have no idea what im doing when under the bonnet ...

Any help guys ?????

cheers Andy

Mudlux, what are you wanting your truck to do? Is it a daily driver?
Should I know the answers to these questions?? :? :?

Personally I love the supra - rather bias - but having driven it for 6 mths on the road over about 50 000km. I'd never do it again!! Great fun but tell the bank that!! 8)
But if its a toy then I do it again in an instant.
They bolt straight into beam axle lux's and wiring diagrames are easy to get. Other than alittle tweeking here and there its a really easy conversion. I just found an old supra and asked if it would fit.

A 22r should bolt straight in an wouldn't require alot of playing round with.

Other than that old lux diesels are shit

22R will bolt strait in :D
3.8 bolt in with minor mods :D
supra motor bolt in with minor mods :D
lexus  bolt in with more mods and more money.... but WAY MORE POWER...AND THAT SWEEEEEEET SOUND !

I HAVE SEEN COMPLETE MOTORS,LOOM AND POOTER FOR AROUND THE $1200 MARK.

heard that about the diesels ..
the 85 lux is my truck for weekend but it also dose regular weekend trips to the wet coast and kaikoura and gumboot(invercargill) and with ga$ co$ting being government assisted it needs to be reasonable to run ..
maybe leaning towards the 22r a little more
:? :? :? :? :?

ooohhhh lexus
the 4.0 lexus is pretty good on gas for a v8 and that sound also helps the wallet out of the pocket as well..

:? will i break stuff with a lexus and 32/9.5/15 super swampers on ... :?

Ok, hate to be the bearer of the reality news here, but in the first post you said you blew your coin on the truck and so whatever you did needs to be cheap.

If you change your motor (mostly), you need cert - theres $340 before you begin.

A 22R will set you back between $600 and $1000 on trademe, I've been looking. R-series mounts, as far as I can tell are the same as diesel ones, which are completely different to petrol ones - so you need new engine mounts which is definitely cert material.

Supra motors bolts straight in to diesel hiluxes, petrols are a mission as there are plenty of things to change like clutch lines, fuel lines, exhaust system, engine mounts etc...

Lexus - they sound magic, they go good and all that... put $5000 in your pocket before you begin and you'll get it done... probably. The bellhousings, flywheels, clutches, ancilliary bits, problems, computers, wiring... the list is big, they are cheap to buy - you can get the motor with loom, factory computer and trans for about $1000 - the cost is NOT there... its in everything else.

Commodore V6 - they also sound magic and go good - but they are also costly to install. The adaptor kit will probably sting you $1500, as will the motor. If you are going to have someone else do the hard work then the bills will mount up.

Alternatively:
3Y alternator - $40-60
3Y radiator - $50-100
3Y motor - $200-800

Well, you do the math :)

have just been offered a 3b (i think) 3.3 litre diesel out of an old landcruiser that is a good runner as my mate is an engineer on a factory trawler and has the money and time to build a lpg 350 for his swb...

as it is free is it worth the change of so much stuff from petrol to diesel , the torque is good in these i have heard ????

how much is there to do ..

so much there is to learn....

you say timaru motors .. is that s c toyota????

I believe they are too tall to fit in the engine bay, and I think they are probably to heavy - Spend you money one something more in tune with your vehicle.

If you want a good reliable diesel to bolt into a Hilux go with the 2.8 (3L). It will bolt to your gearbox with an L-series bellhousing and the electrics are easy and readily available. With a bit of extra $$ in your pocket you can buy an aftermarket turbo kit for them that makes a huge difference or on the cheap you can fit the 2.4TD turbo and manifolds to them for a similar improvement.

I believe Kevin (user:Leithfield) has one coming up for sale in tip top condition. May be worth a look
