Steering box upgrade - TJ

Anyone know of a locally available replacement steering box or upgrade kit/specialist please? I'm on my second box because the first one developed a leak at the pitman now this one's gone as well. I have another good spare but suspect it will go the same way unless I can get it beefed up soemhow. Should mention the tyres are 13.5x 35's and there's quite a bit of strain on all of the steering mechanisms when they're down to 2 psi. any ideas appreciated, cheers

I am not sure about something local, but AGR Super Box might be the best option.

http://www.agrperformance.com/products_parts.php?cat=101&product=116&make=Jeep&model=119

AGR can do out side the frame LHD units that are reverse rotated so they work on RHD inside the frame on the RHD Wranglers. Send them an email.

These steering boxes are a pretty standard “Saginaw” type and are 99.9% sure the same box was fitted to all the Jeeps as well as Chevy blazers or any GM vehicle for that matter, which means you don’t have to shop for a TJ one, JY, TJ, XJ and ZJ should all be the same, except left hand drive of course. I’m betting a XJ one would be far cheaper to purchase from a wrecker than a TJ box. The only thing you may have to swap out would be the Pitman arm as the “drop” changed from model to model.
In sayin that, it’s pretty unusual for the box to leak on the top plate as it is “O” ring sealed, I guess it’s possible you have come down hard on the pitman arm end of the box and pushed the main shaft up which could smash or crack the top cover plate. Try “Peter Church” at Bunce and Curtis for a Saginaw box, last time I was up there he had a pallet load of left hand boxes, the insides are the same as the right hand boxes, the only thing that changed is the cast iron case is opposite the right hand one. Also be aware the top housing will only come off by undoing the main shaft thrust adjusting screw in the centre of the top plate as it is threaded into the top plate and is captured in the end of the main shaft, and check before undoing it, most are “left hand” threaded.

Someone told me that they fitted an XJ steering box to a TJ abd it had a different ratio inside and it needed more turns to go lock to lock.

Ive had them out of tjs into xjs and vise versa. Bernie is correct, the ZJ one is the same also.

They were going for around $175 second hand, I sold my last one for $150.00
