manual or auto terrano ??

Post by grytvikken »

Hi just a fast question regards the fuel economy you can expect from a 91 2.7td nissan terrano
Im interested in whether the manual would be significantly better on fuel than the automatic model.
I have the option of buying both an auto or a manual and would like some opinions on which to buy.
Both are in good condition so its down to fuel economy and general drivability.
cheers guys.

Had a manual one for 10yrs. Being nice to it could get 550+ ks out of a tank. (using 75 of the avalible 80 litres). Not sure about the auto one. never driven one very far. Either way be nice to the gear box particulaly the manual.

My auto was about the same - 500 kms round town, i think i got 600 once on a long trip, and about 550 kms if a mix of highway and town driving. My auto was fine, but i have heard HEAPS of stories of the auto's needing replacing. (not cheap!)

Biggest killer of an auto is heat. If it over heats, things go south very quickly.

Next killer is moisture (particularly water crossings), keep an eye on the oil condition and level and you should be okay.

If you do a lot of heavy towing or offroading, fit an after market auxiliary cooler to extend tranny life.

Modern autos are very good and aren't so huge on fuel (comapred to manuals). More depends on your use of the loud pedal than what you are driving.

myself would definatley go the manual, have had one for 7 yrs but a petrol and never had a drama (except a clutch) a mate brought a auto and it flucked up $2000 later back on the road but problem is normally after the auto gets repaired theres a sensor which quite often goes another 5 hundy so if you doing uni and cant get a warrenty definatly a manual

Just for comparison, how much did your clutch repair cost? On some models clutch is very expensive to replace. Not doubting the manuals, but autos are not the only ones that go bang ($$$). It all depends on how the thing has been looked after by the previous owners and when the repair was done, how competent the mechanic was. For example, Jeep autos like a particular brand of ATF, which most auto shops don't carry. So they insist on using what they have available, and the auto takes a dive and bad wrap.

that was about 40,000 ks ago but was about $200 for the clutch and 4 hundy to fit best to get it done properly have to drop whole subframe and ALWAYS GET FLYWHEEL MACHINED seen guys do clutch jobs in their backyards on normal cars and wonder why it shudders afterwards believe me its worth the $30.00
