went for a drive round the south coast today after giving my mate a small tug out of the sand i noticed a horrible grawnching tapping noise. after a bit of investigation found it was coming from the clutch.noise stops when i put my foot on the clutch.theres no noise when driving or under load, it still goes into gear and clutch still works fine. has anyone any idea what it could be? is my clutch stuffed or is it something much much worse than that?

thanks for your advice in advance
Malcolm

so when ya push the clutch in, the noise goes away?

cause if the noise is there when ya push it in, could be the release bearing or maybe the spigot.

If your lucky it might just be some of that coarse sand in your clutch and it'll eventually grind itself up and it'll go away or otherwise like Dave said it may be the release bearing or spiggot bearing which means you'll have to drop the gearbox :(

Yep noise not there when I push it in . A mate said some thing about release bearing. Do I have to fix right away or is this some thing I can wait untill I can get some money

It sounds a lot worse than sand.

You are not just missing the spring which pulls the clutch release fork forwards towards the slave cylinder?
Just thinking that without this spring the release bearing and clutch fork are possibly free to move and "dance" around when there is no load on them i.e. when you are not pushing on the clutch. Could possibly create some funny noises.
If not and you suspect the release bearing and need some time to save a few bob, I would pull the rubber boot away from the clutch fork (assuming your model Cruiser still has this set-up) and get in there with a can of CRC with one of them extension squirter tubes on it. Give the release bearing a good soaking. It may just work. Some may frown on this practice for fear of contaminating the clutch linings. The way I see it is the clutch or some part of it is stuffed anyway. If you can buy yourself a little time doing this all good and well. When you do eventually pull the gearbox to replace the offending parts it is false economy not to replace everything all at once anyway. You will need to buy a new clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing.

Its not looking so good. I went to see one of Wellingtons better mechanical brains (Turoa). We pulled the Flywheel cover plate off. The noise seams to be in the flywheel. With the cover off I could move the FW about 5mm each way
Looks like Im droping trans out this week to see what I can find

But he can "hear" that something is wrong. Driving for long without identifying whats wrong can lead to a bigger mess, particularly if whatever it is thats "broken" gives up the ghost and destroys neighbouring components.

When you are moving the flywheel backwards and forwards (I assume it is able to be moved this way and not sideways :!: ) does the cranksnout move the same amount?
If so, it is not the gearbox you need to drop. Sounds like the thrustbearings on the crankshaft are shot.
Good news is that these can usually be replaced with the engine and gearbox in place. Drop the sump and do one bearing at a time.
Fiddely but possible and a shytload less work than pulling the engine.

And if the cranksnout doesn't move when you move the flywheel, I wouldn't even start the engine anymore. Because then the flywheel is actually somehow loose from the crankshaft and if/when it lets go altogether it can make a big mess of things.

now listen here son.............

we don't all have daddies paying to fix our trucks, so we would rather fix the issue before it gets worse, not kill it so it costs more money in the long run. :x :x

Im still not sure exactly what my problem is yet(apart from a few of the obvious ie no money shit job a beer fridge that is starting to look a bit bare)so my plan at the moment is to take it to MP Autoparts tomorrow and get them to have a look. Hopefully they can give me some idea. I think its probably going to involve a new Cluch so tomorrow night Im hosting a PULL THE CLUTCH OUT PARTY at 19 Nicolaus st Upper Hutt (All Cutt concrete cutters yard). Beer and food will be provided!!! I do need to get hold of a trolley jack . Can anyone lend me one for a few days. Work finishes about 4 so any time after that
Thanks Malcolm

I dealt with them(I think the guys name was Greg) and they rebuilt my pressure plate and modified my carrier etc when I put my chev in, he was an awesome dude who knew a lot about clutches and I'd definately recommend them

Is the 2F flywheel still on Curlys old engine? I compared the 2F and 3F flywheels when I pulled my old engine out and the 2F is a thicker and heavier flywheel but should still fit.... and probably helps give a bit of torque to keep those 35's turning
