Re-Gearing a 91 Hilux 2.8l Diesel

Post by Paybac »

hi,

I'm doing some research for a mate. He is looking at options for re-gaining some power now that he has got his lift and 33's. Is re-gearing the way to go? What would be an approx cost? Or do you guys have some other ideas for re-gaining power?

Cheers

Put more power in the thing!.

Do you know what gears he has at the moment?.

Most people run 4.5's, 4.88's , or 5.1 (i think any ways) gears in there hilux diffs for 33's, but 4.88s are near inposible to find now and brake easy, And 5.1s are imposible to find you wont ever find a 5.1. and if you do buy it!

If you can find a good 4.88 diff head, your proberly looking at about $200 thru to about $800 each, but that is still cheaper then buying a re-gear kit.

4.8's are perfect for the job. should bring gearing back to standard. not that hard to find. there are some on trademe now. as long as they have the correct backlash (and they should unless well stuffed) then you will never break them with a 2.8 so don't worry about strength.

Learn the facts before offering the advice fella, still you are young
5.1 will be impossible to find, as they never made them. 5.29's on the other hand................. But they very hard to find now.
Plenty of 4.88's around, if you look for them. But I believe that your best option is to PM Jafa from this forum and get a price for a replacement ring and pinion set. He has, or can get, them in all the most common ratios, and "I think" they cost less than $350 each. Bloody good value.

But then you need someone pretty competent to set your diffs up with the new gears ($$$), whereas just throwing in a new pumpkin is well within the scope of your average DIYer?

Don't believe all the mystery around setting up a diff head. It is not hard to do, especially in a diesel 4wd. It's not like it is going to spin as fast as a std car.

The gears that Jaffa has should be a piece of cake to setup I have seen the instructions, the worst bit would be geting the current gear off if you dont want to do it yourself take the pumpkin out and take to a mechanic you also know everything is in new condition rather than a second hand set in unknown condition.

You also get the solid spacerrather than the crush tube.

Edit to be able to read  I knew what I ment

you could try the 2.4 turbo and a re-gear to 4.88 or 5.29 the hilux 2.8 is not a diesel a turbo on them makes them more car like but don't expect it to overtake and drive like a normal car, turbo 2.8 and a regear would be more comefortable to drive with the 4.88's, 5.29 may be a little too far on 33's for the open road.

Roc and others that run 5.29's will know better what that gearing is like compared to standard I have only run the 2.8 turbo on 33's and 4.88 it was much nicer to drive if you are spending money the turbo puts fuel economy down to being the same cost to run as the 2.2 petrol I still have, poss a 5.29 regear would be a better option if you still get the 100K's out of them anddont run out of rev's.

I'm with Steve on that. 4.88's would be my choice of gearing for 33's. My 'lux was "speedo perfect" when running 5.29's with 36" swampers.

i have just set two diffs up using jafas r&p sets it cost me, don't quote me $800 od bucks for 2 new R&P and bearing sets and $300 to get them set with some work done myself.

and i run a 2.8 turbo diesel on 33s and it drives mint and have also have run 36s and the gearing is still ok

you can bet new diffs and the peace of mind that they arnt going to go pop
